7-ish? Is there any real reason to get to LA at lunch time?
Its not like traffic is any better in LA at one time versus another. It'll suck either way.
I'd think we would want to get to the hotel around 3 or 4, check in, get a snack/shower/nap and head over to the show location around dinner time to look it over, wash the cars and decide on the plan for Saturday.
At worst, the drive is 7 hours. I've done it in well under 5. Plan on 6 with this many cars and people wanting/needing to stop.

PS - Is that the Cracker Barrel on Litchfield Rd in Goodyear?

Yet another page topper for me. I have definitely set a new record!

I believe it's Litchfield. Costco @ 99th Ave & McDowell is an option too.
Or, even at Avondale Mazda.

Add another FD to the group. Welcome Troy and Leesa!!

As far as departure place and time, I'm thinking it will be the traditional place [Cracker Barrel (I-10 and Litchfield Road)], and probably around 8 am. Weather should be cool, but much depends on the forecast. Most years it takes between 6 and 7 hours to move this many cars, trailers, and people with 2-3 stops for gas and food between here and LA. If we get into LA before 3 pm we miss much of the evening RUSH hour, which is easier on everyone's clutch, nerves and knuckles. Also, the SoCal club may be setting up a mobile detailer to come to our hotel, which will save time for everyone having to search out a car wash. This has helped tremendously in the past.

Then it's check in time and check out our dinner options before heading over to Dromo 1 for GoKart Racing to benefit JDRF.

Can't wait!!!!!

Sounds like a great plan. I can't wait!!!

The caravan is going to be absolutely insane. Its going to look like a Gumball or Cannonball run! (Hopefully without all of the citations and jail time.)

Has anybody alerted the MEDIA or the State Police ?
Would be quite a site if we could all get in a pic from the air.

Regarding Media, I will be sending a press release out to several local morning shows. Manytimes they cover events like this 'cause it's a great visual to use in conjunction with the morning weather report. That, and it would get our club some great publicity. We'll see if anyone bites.

MazdaManiac, last year we lost a little time waiting for a seven with problems at about Palm Springs.

So I assume there is a little time built in for cars that develop problems on the trip. I would think there will be less problems this year as the event is 20 days later, and it should be significantly cooler, even in AZ.

There was this RX-4 that was always ahead of us last year. Could not figure out how he did that.

Don't forget your quarters! We hit a bunch of toll roads in LA.

Good to see some Tucson folks joining for the ride, Troy and Leesa!

I'll be carrying a full compliment of tools and some of my magic "BandAids". I can get a car down the road at least a few miles at a time no matter what!

The toll roads are avoidable, but I guess that depends on preferred routes.
I hate tolls like I hate traffic and would rather drive 100% of the distance out of the way to avoid them.
But that is just me...

We will likely use the toll roads again this year since they save a half hour getting into Irvine and are mainly empty (except for us)

Last year there were two tolls (~3$ each). Saves time, but mainly saves on nerves and conjestion. We'll see. Last year the tolls dumped us off about 3 miles from the event location. If we can find a better way to get there without using the tolls this year we'll definitely consider it.

You are probably right about that, Tim. I just have a hatred of toll roads.
Back on the east coast, the tolls are arbitrary - the drive from DC to New York has sections where it is a few quarters here and there and then, suddenly, you are expected to pay $6 to go 1/4 mile over a bridge without the choice to take a different route. Its entrapment!

I'll examine some route choices, put them up for discussion and then download them to my NAV in the car for the trip.

If the new location is close to the old one then the toll roads are the way to go considering both distance and traffic congestion. Especially getting into town at the beginning of rush hour they can easily save an hour vs. staying on the regular highways.

Will we be stopping first at the event location like in years past or will this drive be straight to the hotel?

And 1 more question, why the stop #1 in Blythe? Currently gas is quite alot cheaper at the Flying J on the AZ side of the border. In a 15mpg REPU that makes a difference :D

Yeah,
A gas stop while on the AZ side of the border will save us some cash.

The traffics sucks and I'd gladly pay tolls. I got stuck in them last year when I lost the pack. It took me another 1-2hours to just get back on course because of the bumper to bumper traffic.

I've never been to the Kart racing. Do you guys have it's address so I can mapquest it?

The stop at Palm springs is usually good because we can all eat lunch and wait for the guys with trailers because we usually out pace them quickly.

CAN'T WAIT!

Cheap gas is fine (even in a 16 MPG RX-8), but good gas is better (think PING). I always go with Chevron when I can find it - Flying J is turtle ****.
We could always stop in Quartzsite instead.

I have the toll road in the directions I posted, though it is only 5 miles out of the way to stay on the Riverside Freeway all the way to 55 and head south.

These are all good ideas guys. Let's work to drill down the final options in the next week or so before posting the final "official" route. Email me at teull@***.net if you want to participate in planning.

Also, following the Sevenstock car show, join the club for the Sevenstock Banquet Reception and Saturday evening Sevenstock Dinner. Our club traditionally hosts the "Big List/Forums" Reception, which gives you the opportunity to meet many of the on-line posters face-to-face in a relaxed and "friendly " atmosphere. If you haven't already ordered your Banquet tickets please do so by going to the following website and purchasing tickets.

http://www.rotary13b1.com/ss9.html

We usually have a table set aside for RCCAZ members. Mazda's working to put together yet another great program. This is your opportunity to meet many of the leaders in the rotary community and talk with them in a one-on-one setting. Tickets are moving fast, and once they're gone, they're gone. Order 'em up!

Finally, Sevenstock organizers are looking for a few great cars to be included in this year's courtyard display. If you feel your car has the "right stuff" and would like to be included among the "best of the best" go to sevenstock.org, follow the instructions to submit your car for consideration, and best of luck!!

Tim

Just Added to the Sevenstock 9 Banquet Program

Latest news regarding the Sevenstock Dinner Program:

Just confirmed for Sevenstock 9 are Sylvain Tremblay and David Haskell of SpeedSource Race Engineering! Making the trip to SoCal with Tremblay and Haskell will be their 3-rotor Grand Am Rolex GT RX8 they been developing and competing in for 2006. SpeedSource has specialized in Mazda racing since its inception. Throughout the late '90s, continual development of the 2nd generation Mazda RX-7 produced a national market for the ITS class car, engines, and components. SpeedSource built over 50 Mazda RX-7s and dominated club racing, winning the SCCA ITS ARRC championship in 1998 and 1999.
SpeedSource also developed the 3rd generation Mazda Twin-Turbo RX-7, and again produced on-track results and built a market base for race parts. Endurance racing from 1996 through 1998 saw the two-car team score numerous poles, podium finishes, and the 1998 team championship in the Speedvision Cup. SpeedSource, with primary support for Mazdaspeed and Mazda USA, develops, builds and races the Mazda RX-8 in the Grand-Am Cup ST Championship, winning the drivers and teams championship in 2004, the first year of development. For 2005, SpeedSource repeated their 2004 success with the 2005 Driver, Team, and Manufacturer's Championship.
Our Banquet program has come together extremely well and with the newest addition it promises to be something very special. Purchase your tickets today!
