RECALL THREAD/MNAO suspend RX-8 deliveries.

Effective immediately, MNAO has informed dealers that they are to suspend delivery of RX-8's and that a recall will be conducted in August for inspection/repair of possible thermal damage.

Mazda have discovered that some 04 and 05 model RX-8's can suffer from excessive heat build up if the engine is idled at high rpm, causing possible damage to the O2 sensors, neutral switch and back-up lights. There is also a possibility of some cars suffering fuel tank damage, malfunction of the fuel gauge or problems with the park brake.

My mate couldn't tell me if this will effect RX-8's from other markets, that info I hope to find out later this week.

Regards,

Gomez .

What symptoms should we look out for?

Is this going to be a total recall?

My understanding at this stage is that yes, all '04 and '05 RX-8's will be recalled. The dealers will also have to inspect/repair their in-stock RX-8's before deliveries can continue. I believe they can still sell RX-8's, they just can't deliver them.

I have no other details ATM. Symptoms as listed in my first post. An underbody inspection will have to be carried out by the dealer.

Hmmm, I cant understand why this would be restricted to one market only?

Location of some thing such as the wire harness would be different on RH and LH models.

I'm not sure whether the North American exhaust system is the same as that supplied to other markets either. They may have different cats to us, Andrew. It's early......will hopefully find out further details in a few days.

LH/RH would still affect other markets as NA aren't the only people driving on the Right side of the road.

Geez Gomez...I hate teasers like this :-P

Andrew

EDIT: And O2 sensors are engine bay items. What makes you mention Cats?

ahhh I stand corrected...You also say "Pre cat" like it wasn't even in the engine bay. You aren't trying to save my feelings are you?

"Engine bay" is hard to define in the 8.. the renesis sits so low and so far back what is typically in the engine bay of other vehicles isn't in the 8.

I say pre cat because there is one before the cat and one after the cat and they are compared to check catalyst efficiency.

No....the recall won't be happening until next month. New cars can be delivered earlier than that, but can't be delivered to customers until they've been inspected/repaired. Not sure how long that will take ATM.....

I see on another thread that some dealers aren't even allowing test drives .

How about those who do burnouts, for example? Or those doing dyno runs without shop radiator cooling fans? Or someone who likes upsetting the neighbours at 4am by revving to 6000rpm and holding it there for a few minutes?!!

I believe you, like everyone else in North America with an '04 or '05 RX-8, will be contacted to bring your car in. So yes, you'll be affected. Only your dealer will be able to determine if your car has anything in need of repair.

At this early stage, I have no information as to what repair kit or part(s) will be required.....if any.

When was the last time you heard of anybody siting any of these issues with their car in NA?... and there are plenty of people who have abused their cars in one way or another.

And how many units sitting on dealer lots have been allowed to go drag racing, or sit at high revs for extended periods of time. By the way ... I don't call that idling

I personally never have.

Seems way out of proportion to do a full recall. It will be interesting to hear more details.

You sure this isn't some weird Aussie humor?

'fraid not .

I suppose "idling" in this case refers to high(er) RPM without the car moving. The move to a total recall would be on the grounds that the fuel tank can suffer damage (according to Mazda). That's just my opinion though.

Nothing via google news yet, nothing posted on the TSB section at finishlineperformance.com...

I'll ignore this until I get a letter in the mail from MNAO. Till then, it's filed in the 'rumor' bitbucket.

Hmmmmmmmmm...

Sure, gimmie a new lump.. one that doesn't smell like a refinery when you start it cold.. :D

Oh wait, that's software.. uh.. what could be screwed up, hardware-wise?

At least its not doing what the FD did at first.. going up in flames. (Ditto for the first E-Type jags..)

Seriously, if they found it this quick, and they're gonna fix it (whatever it is), then kudos to mazda. Instead of sweepeing it under the rug like some other car companies.

The dealers haven't even been told what they need to do to effect repair yet. I believe they'll find out next week.

Your notification is a little further down the track.....

...or those who move their car a short distance and rev their engine up for a few seconds to burn off the oil...like you're supposed to do...according to Mazda salesmen, anyway.

I rarely bother with that, since my car starts up okay the next day regardless. Lucky me!

\/\/\/ Ummm...a pic of what?
