Something fishy about this one... Everyone knows people don't trade STIs for RX-8s, they trade RX-8s for STIs Cas, Crossfire, streetracing?

Definitley cheaper to insure. It counts as a four door car with a four cylinder. Plus no turbo to raise price either.

I was 18 when I bought mine and my insurance went down when I got it. And I was driving a v6 full size truck at the time!

I too considered an STi when I got my 8 and as far as the insurance goes, believe it or not, the STi was actually cheaper than the 8 with my company, granted it was only $10 every 6 months but I was floored since I figured it would be more than the WRX I was getting out of. Incidently, both the 8 and STi were cheaper than the WRX.

I had an 8, and I now have the STI, and I can tell you if performance is your thing that’s a very bad move. Handling and breaking are almost dead even, acceleration clearly goes to the STI. In other words if you go to the track, the STI is a winner, and if you’re a street racer the STI is a winner.

Aside from making the argument that the RX-8 is better looking (and please don’t start another one of those threads), I can’t see why you would make this move. As daily drivers I found the STI to be a better car, better on gas, and better in bad weather. The ride is a little stiff, but so is the 8’s. The STI has a ton more cargo room and normal doors in the back.

My advice would be to wait until Mazda ups the power, or the aftermarket becomes a little better for the 8. Otherwise you’re probably going to end up kicking yourself.

You have no idea what your talking about. They handle differently, but a well driven STI should walk a well driven 8 on a road course. As far as sex appeal goes, well that’s subjective, so I won't argue with you.

I do not believe that you actually own an STI; I think you’re just trying to stir up trouble.

I have owned both, and I can tell you that your wrong. You either don't know how to drive, or your running around on bald tires. Open up any mag and look at the stats, they are close but they always lean in the direction of the STI. Before you flame, I know those tests are not as scientific as they should be, but they are as close to objective as we are going to get here.

I wasn't just talking about power; I was also talking about handling. The RX-8 may get to it’s limits with more confidence, but the limits of the STI are a little better.

As far as an every day driver the STI is better in my opinion. The STI gets better gas mileage. The STI has more room, and is easier to get in and out of. The STI is better in snow, and rain. The STI's power band is more accessible. The STI does not require a long warm up period to avoid flooding. The STI is a more reliable car. The STI has a bigger trunk. The STI has normal rear doors.

Exactly what does the 8 offer that makes it a better daily driver?

Before I got my 8 I had a faster car, but after buyin the 8 I would never go back. I had driven the sti and a have also driven a modded wrx (it was faster than a sti) and in my opinion the 8 is a much better car overall. Pkskull77, I agree the sti has more room but it sorta feels like a truck inside. The seating position is way too high in it, the wrx seemed much better though. In the 8 you have a feeling of being in a pilots chair, its like a cockpit, and it actually feels like a sports car. The interior is also much better in the 8, of course its just my opinion, but I belive anyone, even in the sti community can vouch for that. Handling in the eight is superior, coming from my experince. I know I can take sharp turns faster than a sti, I had direct comparison but sorry no actual proof. The sti of course makes up for it in the straights. When autoxing for example, I rarely have seen a stock sti beat me, there were others of course, modded, that I didnt have a chance against. I know these are some small things but they add up. On an actual course I agree, the sti may take the 8. As far as the reliability factor goes, I dont think anything you mentioned is a major facor. I have never flooded my 8. Turned it on and then off many times without turning it off, and that was in the winter also. When I got it I always let it warm up, but now I treat it liek any other car. Of course when going for a drive, I always let it fully warm up before giving it hell, but I have gotten accustomed to it adn dont care. I dunno, Im not going to write anyomer crap but DropTheHammer, if you go buy tge 8, I bet you wont regret it. And welcome> peace out

Thumbs up

You tell us not to say the truth hurts: The STi is so damn ugly lol. You guys can argue so much that beauty isn't everything but it has to account for something. The 8 is definately not the fastest but it is the most balanced : speed, looks(exterior and interior), utility, feeling, handling, uniqueness. Name another car that is as balanced for this price. It is great value. The only other car I considered was the G35C, which my friend owns, but that thing is so damn heavy, it doesn't "feel" good. (Correction: The torque feels damn good)

And the only two people are calling you a liar are ironically WRX/STi owners. One a hardcore WRX owner and the other a converted 8 owner who from the beginning was never happy with the car because he was looking for speeeeed and didn't know what he was getting himself into and now he trolls here still. lol

On your test drive, let it all out(if you can) and then you decide. Don't let people influence you too much (myself included). Good luck!

Below are some R&T numbers, definently not the end all and be all of any discussions, but enough proof to dispell the myth that the RX-8 is a better handler than the STI. In all honesty the cars are almost dead even, acceleration aside.

http://www.roadandtrack.com/article....rticle_id=1114

STI
60-0 mph 111 feet.
80-0 mph 193 feet.
Skidpad .88 g's
Slalom 68.4 mph

http://www.roadandtrack.com/article....rticle_id=1111

RX-8

60-0 mph 114 feet
80-0 mph 202 feet
Skidpad .88 g's
Slalom 65.4 mph

As far as the other stuff, looks/interior, all personal prefrence, and making any arguments on it is silly. To each their own.

My point is this. Trading in a 2005 STI for a car that is a step down, is ridiculous. Not only are you going to lose a ton of money on the transaction, your not gaining anything in performance/driveability. If you want a better daily driver get a Toyota. If you want a better sports car, get a used Vett.
