Adapting a GT30R or GT35R to the GReddy flanges

I'm weighing my options on how to get more flow.

The simplest way would be to mod the 18g with a bigger compressor wheel & trim the turbine. However, that still leaves me with a journal bearing turbo and I've got durability concerns with that. Also, I doubt it will flow enough to feed my ported engine.

So, GT30R (3071) or GT35R? My ambitions are modest (reliable 300WHP or a bit more on CA 91 octane), and I really like fast spool and torque down low, hence my bias towards the 3071 over gt35.

My question is, what work will need to be done to adapt the GT30R to the weird GReddy flanges? I'm pretty sure some of you have done this without replacing your exhaust manifold?

The more details, the better. Yes, I have done some searches, but maybe not well enough.

I asked this quite a while ago.. and it is not possible because there is no room. I even found a GT35R with a T2 turbine on ebay and asked this question cause it sounded like a bolt up. I don't have a greddy kit so I can't speak of experience, just saying what others told me.

I can't believe that every person on this group who has gone the GT35 or T4 route has fabb'ed their own exhaust manifold, but maybe I'm wrong.

You guys aren't thinking outside the box. Make more room first of all. A new engine mount can make this a reality. Mazsport sells these. Then make an adapter. The turbo doesn't have to be mounted in the same location as the Greddy one. You can still use the exhaust manifold. Just make an extension pipe to move the turbo up to where you need it to clear. It will work fine. You'd need to make a new downpipe anyways. Problem solved.

Thanks, RG. Do you know of anyone who's done this stuff and has pics and/or step by step explanations?

I know of someone that has done it successfully on an RX-8 but am not currently at liberty to say who it is as it isn't my turbo or my car. I can say it works just fine. Sorry there are no instructions on how to do so as far as I know. It's a pretty straight forward thing though. There's not much to it.

Was it a GT35R? Or can you not say that either.

I don't know what turbo it was. I just know it was larger and needed to be moved. It's the same concept so the adpater would work just fine. I personally am a fan of the 60-1. Even the smaller 60-1HiFi is a great choice for a street car under 400 hp. I haven't jumped on the GT35 bandwagon yet.

Mine is T04E and it sits way back in where the muffler used to be, with 2.5" air pipe running back to the intercooler, and honestly, since I did some tuning, there is not much lag there. At least nothing I would really want to complain about.
The point is GT35 will spool and run well with an adapter.

yeah i think me too, we're working on an adaptor to put a gt35r onto a S5 t2 manifold, in an fc, and the stock fcc hotside (which everyone says is too small) just dwarfs the gt35....

compressors nice though, if you're into that....

Best direct replacement is the GT2871R.

Other than the inlet (one pipe to cut on the kit) it is a drect bolt-up to the GReddy position, flows WAY more air (it is an upgrade to the 2860RS "Disco Potato" which is an upgrade to the turbo used on the R34 Skyline).

The turbine flanges are the same dimensions.

BTW - the turbo in the kit, despite being a Mitsubishi-spec TD06, is actually a clocked Garrett GT2860R, dimensionally.

How new is the GT2871R? I remember you mentioning Garrett would be releasing a new turbo that would be the perfect upgrade for Greddy users.

OK, so maybe I'm pushing my 'stupid' button because I didn't install the GReddy turbo myself, but I thought it was oil cooled only? If so, then what would be the most cost-effective way to get water to it?

I think it is possible to order all the options so that it does bolt right up.
Probably kinda expensive.

at 1200 bucks (atpturbo) for way more flow, ball bearings, and water cooling it seems like a decent deal

or for 200 less you can get your T618Z rebuilt

If it's just the inlet pipe from the greddy kit that needs to be cut I don't feel that would be too much work for what it's worth

It is kinda cool though... we see where the MM upgrade idea originated.
