I did a search and found this appears to be a somewhat common complaint. Wanted to get some input on a couple of questions. Here are the symptoms I'm having.

Whenever I pull up to a stop and put the car into neutral I get a "clunk" sound when I then depress the clutch and quickly put the car into 1st gear. However, if I push in the clutch and hold it there for a few seconds and then put it into gear - no clunck. It also only does it one time per stop.

I've been driving manual cars all my life and have never experienced this before. To ease my mind, I had the dealer check the problem. They immediately said the slave cylinder was bad and replaced it. After replacing the slave, it still does exactly the same thing.

My questions for the group are: 1) does everyone agree this is just the nature of the car and it's ok - still seems wrong to me and something obviously seemed wrong to the dealer since they replaced the slave; 2) has anyone tried different oils in the transmission like redline?

try explaining where the noise is from. The tranny gear box or the drive train gears. Are you sure you don't need to adjust the cluth or replace it.

Yep. Normal sound.
I'm running synthetic lube in my tranny and diff but the sound is still there.

 

Thanks. The car has almost 6,000 miles on it purchased new about 5 months ago (it's a 2006). It's hard to tell for sure where the noise is coming from. When I get the clunk it almost sounds like it's coming from somewhere along the driveline either transmission or towards the rear end (perhaps the slack being taken up and the differential gears coming together???).

Mine does it as well. Always has. 04 with 16K on it.

mine does it too, and i was wondering the same thing, it doesnt seem to affect anything, it just sounds like the gears are engaging and getting ready to go. for the people who say it isnt normal, what do you advise that we should do?

I get that too. Almost every time i put it in 1st

As soon as i get time, im gonna take it in. Never had that sound/feel on any manual car ive driven

hey charles, I think you better order at least 500000000000 of those clutch brackets when you get them in because theres obviously a bunch of customers @.@

 

I get this noise too.
I just checked my clutch pedal bracket it's fine.
What i noticed was that...when I put the gear in a bit quick it would make this slight "thunk" noise.
When I put it in first gear slowly it does not make the "thunk" noise.

I am not too worried about it. I experience no drivability issues.
My old 89 rx7 did this too sometimes and it drove fine.

 

Mine does that too, never really worried about it.

its normal. and not just the 8. 350z seem to do it as well. its just as rocky when releasing the clutch in first on low speeds. careful study tells me its normal on these newer RWD cars.

the dealer only replaced ur slave because you complained about it and its easy warranty work. changed out in only a few minutes on the rack.

i wouldn't worry too much on it.

 

I suppose I should have asked how quickly those with concerns are trying to shift into the lower gears. It takes a moment for the synchros to spin up, especially when going from 3-2, or 2-1, as those are larger differences in gearings from one to the next.

 

289: i got only 1,400 miles here and it done it since new. my father's 350z did it new. my friend's G35 did it new. and all other units of these newer RWD all seem to make same noise from stop into 1st. and the clutch releasing noise in 1st on low speeds are noticeable as well.

its very hardly noticeable at all in FWD cars if thats what you're doing the comparison with.

 

If your assertion is true in that it is normal, then I would ask you to at least agree that new trannies are junk. I have driven trucks that didn't have this problem and neither of the Aisin transmissions that have been in my car have done that. The transmission I now have in my car doesn't exactly shift well going into 5th and 6th but the others are nice. My old tranny, once I rebuild it with some mods, will(hopefully) be far better than what we are talking about here.

 

i dont think they are junk, they just make little weird sounds. if they were junk, they wouldn't be able to handle the power of FI
