OFFICIAL 2009 Rx8 info!!!! Info Sheet, Order Form, Spec Deck and Colors INSIDE!!!

As most of you know the 2009 Rx8 is upon us. I've aquired some addition info for you rotor heads about some of it's newer updates that you don't see in the pics that are floating around here. I tried searching but couldn't find any threads about some of the specifics of what Mazda has actually upgraded for the 2009 model year. With that said here are some things that Mazda has changed that actually suprised me.

1. Most of you knew about the oil dipstick access panel. This was redesigned to have an even longer dip stick to check the oil. So it's not just a cover.

2. The new electric oil metering pump is actually two units and is now located on top of the engine. My EPC (Electronic Parts Catalog) shows a really confusing diagram of it. One pump flows metering oil to 4 nozzles while the 2nd unit flows to two more nozzles. Possibly high rpm/load dependent? So now each rotor housing has 3 injection nozzles like the 16x.

3. The oil filter is now located on the lower left side front cover. Nice touch for easier access but here's the kicker, the oil pump is completely redesigned and looks nothing like the previous versions. Maybe the newer pump has upgraded flow capabilities?

4. Redesigned larger capacity oil pan. It's about time!

5. Redesigned larger capacity fuel tank. This is a much needed addition since the manual tranny is mated to 4.77 rear end gear ratios. This thing is gonna drink some fuel.

6. Miata 6speed Manual transmission. I think most new about this already!

7. One touch auto drivers and passengers windows.

8. Added aux input jack.

Options include:

9. Ceterpoint BOSE sound system.

10. AUTO air conditioning.

11. Touch screen navigation.

12. Bluetooth Hand-Free Telephone.

If most of you are wondering how I got this info, that's because I sell Mazda parts at my local dealer.

Oh yea! I tried to get pricing on some things but that info is currently unavailable. I may have more info next month when I get another update on my EPC.

Take care!

Dominion I don't visit the Miata boards too much so I really can't say. I'm sure someone has turbo charged an 06 and up Miata by now.

Now that is the one thing that I would like to retrofit onto my 06... I wonder how close they match up or if the front subframe is also re-designed to accommodate it.

Sweet! I think a lot of folks would be less bothered by the mileage if the car had a larger cruising range.

So, with all of the oil related changes, are you going to have to add oil less frequently to the 2009?

It's bolts up to the original mounting holes as I was told, But it does not look like it would be a cheap upgrade. Two piece now. Aluminum sides and all.
Here is a pic.

Here's something to consider. My 91 NA Rx7 convertible has a fuel tank about the same capacity as the 04-08 Rx8. At 3,000rpm highway cruising, I'm going about 75mph. Even with A/C on, I can drive about 410 miles per tank. My vert is only about 150lbs lighter than the Rx8. The Rx8 however (due to gearing) revs at a much higher rpm at 75. The engine will naturally consume more fuel (as it most certainly already does). This is a shame because even my Fd got over 25mpg highway. Adding and even taller rear gear ratio will cause the engine to rev even higher at highway speeds. This may wash out the advantage of having a larger capacity fuel tank. Now of course, this all depends on if Mazda has changed the 6th gear ratio in the Miata tranny to lower the highway cruising rpm. IMHO that is something they seriously need to consider doing. Realistically, there's no reason to be doing heavy acceleration in 6th gear.

It's too early to tell but based on the above pic, it may be a possibility that the injection system may feed more oil since were now injecting in all three areas. It kinda goes back into my above consumption theory. More consumption means you need a larger capacity to draw from so it keeps things in balance.

On a side note, all these oil system related changes are way outside anything I felt Mazda would ever do. From the Cosmos to the Rx series vehicles of the 70's, Mazda has been consistant in how they engineer the lubrication system. I just hope these changes stay relaible.

Thats easy! A RP short shifter.

gas tank larger? 1 gallon or what?

larger oil pan? What does it hold now? 7 quarts in place of 6?

My GOD people. Forget about the 4.77 gear. I believe it is only available on the R3 with 19" wheels.

The 19" wheels will off-set the gearing and make it the same as ours.

A 4.77 gear w/ 18" would be an improvement.

Mazda sends the techs M-TIPS brochures. This basically gives the techs a heads up on new changes and how to diagnose certain tricky problems.

Gas tank! I currently don't have any capacity numbers. Same goes for the oil pan. The 4.77 ring gear is standard on all manual tranny cars, not just the R3. Lastly the 19" wheels shouldn't change the rolling diameter if Mazda offsets the larger wheels with a lower profile tire. They already do this with the current 16"-18" wheels. I know this as the speed sensors are just one part number per corner and are not wheel specific meaning they are used for both suspensions and wheel sizes. Having two different rolling diameter tires means Mazda would have two different sensors and additional programing to read both.

The 19" wheels have a shorter profile, meaning that the total diameter including tire stays virtually the same as the 18".

I figured I'd start a new thread because my gear chart got buried pages deep within the misinformation of the other thread.

The 'strengthened' transmission, is acutally the MX-5 transmission. I saw a new RX-8 version of it when I was in the Mazda Tech center in Irvine last month. This is 100% confirmed. Completely different transmission, with slightly different ratios than the current Aisin box.

Provided the ratios don't change from the MX-5 transmission, the following should be a very accurate gear chart showing the differences between an '04-'08 car and the '09 R3. I omitted 1st gear from this, but first is significantly shorter, so it will run out sooner.

I'll work to verify that the ratios aren't going to change. We hope to have a test-mule transmission here to play with in a month or so, and when we do I'll let everyone know how it holds up.

Wow, awesome information. I've been wondering what was going to happen with the engines, and it looks like Mazda is still on top of things.

The pic above the ipod integration might be a bluetooth module? Thinking the smaller box could be a microphone.
