My 8 has gone down. And it doesn't sound good.
I was just told that I had a Catastrophic Misfire and Cat Meltdown.
It only has 25K on it.
I took it to the dealer about a month or two ago about the car being hard to start. Basically when I'd turn the key since being new, it would start with no hesitation. First crank. Nice purr.
Now it takes two to three turns to get it going. They told me everything was fine.
I knew it wasn't.
Was this something with the fuel management system that was dumping too much fuel before the car started and this fuel ending up in the cat.
I read the other thread about the melting cat
For about a month now I've been actively searching to get some HP... SRT8, S4, or something that's not normal. I might be too late.
Isn't the cat covered under the manufactures rust/body warranty?
Kinda sick at this moment.

Got the bad news.
2K plus.
Warranty went after 4 years.
They'll fix the cat and mounts no cost to me (whatever that means).
Basic: whatever failed caused major damage. Points, plugs, and whatever puts fuel to the system. Said number two rotor misfired. Can anybody translate?

Yes, it's called a snow job. If your rotor 'failed' you need a new engine and that = more than 2K, and also should be covered under the powertrain warranty. If only the CAT just did it's melty thing, which it does, that's covered under the emmisions warranty.
Get them to tell you what really is going on and have someone there with you that can understand what they are telling you so you don't get hosed.
ps What do you mean in your sig - PCM Reflash?

Any recourse because i brought it in early??
The service guy said that because it wasn't under warranty when I brought it in, it doesn't help.
Just because they didn't diagnose the problem that cause this massive problem, It's not their fault.
Would it have happened anyway?
There should be some thing that says if they don't find the cause of the problem, and it turns out that something is wrong and it ends up killing somebody there liability lies somewhere.
Pretty bumbed.

If it's an 04, they should have sent you a notice that it was convered for at least 4 years. I thought mine read like 5 years, 60K miles (though I lost my warranty when I turboed my car).

Mine is dated August 2006: "2004-2006 RX-8 Powertrain Warranty Extension Program SSP 67". The warranty is "extended to 5 years (60 months) from the original warranty start date, with a 60,000 mileage limitation". You should be covered.

Update:
Spoke with Service manager. Jim Sams at Riverside Mazda.
He stated the drive train warranty covers any engine parts internal that may break or wear prematurely. The Coils and ignition parts and sensors are not a part of the warranty.
Spoke with Robin at Mazda Corporate.
Told her my story. She said she would contact the dealer. But didn't think that there was a wrong diagnosis of the problem that I brought in on 1.2.08.
She did mention something about the service hotline or something like that, that they could have called.
The day after New Years and a lot of people wanting to take it easy maybe.
Their service guy is going to tell me what's going on and what exactly they will replace.
Two Grand sounds a bit much for the ignition sys, but I could be wrong.
The service guy told me that they would cover the Cat and Mounts (like they aren't supposed to be covered and doing me a favor), but I don't know.
Why would they cover the cat and mounts and not the ignition stuff?

The cat is an emmisions item, the mounts are an known problem with a TSB issued. Sounds like you could get the Mazsport ignition for less than the cost of what they want (if you can get it quickly) or DIY w/OEM ignition parts and be ahead of the game, moneywize.

Robin just called from corporate and said that the district customer support manager has denied any assistance on this.
She said that the service manager went over her head and contacted the district customer service manager.
I asked for his name and she said, "For security purposes we can't give this information out."
This is somebody that is making summary judgment on service issues, mr. noname.
I've made a call to a friend that is a business lawyer to get his take.
I thought that there was something noble to keeping a car, besides not having a monthly payment.
If I made a mistake it was not logging in here and looking at all the crap some of you guys were going through, the fuel smell, and hard starting issues.
I don't want to throw the baby out with the bath water, but this thing is probably history. I'm going to have to step up the service ladder to a Lexus or those that have known customer service excellence.
What's mazda known for???
Oh yeah
ZOOM ZOOM.

Well Gang, all is not as gloomy as one would percieve.
Bottom line they are taking 1400.00+ off of the bill.
I think a little negociating went on in the background. The service guy David said he went to bat for me, Which he probably did, but I think it was my statement to the Mazda Corp Robin, "I'll contact my lawyer." that probably did the trick.
Reason being: I happen to work with a lawyer who used to work for GM in their Lemon Law claims division. I told him my story and he said he was, chomping at the bit to get at them, (my paraphrase) and was ready to fire off a letter. He now works for a big Law firm. I had thought he had already done something, but he said it was probably my calm and direct dimeanor that saved the day, (and answered prayers). I mean who has 2.5 grand to give to somebody unexpectedly.
Now that that's over I am going to get the MS exhaust. They want 1K for everything.
Not willing to do that. So I am going to look for it on the net to see what I can get. Lowest so far is 635. To me the sound is like the RB with the supercat.
Thanks for all of your prayers and good wishes.
