Hey guys, I believe my engine is flooded, was wondering if anyone knew how to deflood one? THANK YOU!

 

If you're an MT - push start it.

If that fails or if you have an AT - search in the trouble shooting forum for a DIY deflooding by Alfy. Worked for me.

Take the fuse for the fuel pump out. And try to crack over the engine. Will have to do this multiple time. Your car should start up after 15 to 20 mins of trying to start it up with the feul pump relay out.

After it starts up let it run for abt 2 min then shut it down put the fuse back in and start it again.

U may wanna bring it to the dealer or the mechanic after just to make sure u did damage and parts like seals and stuff.

I've deflooded successfully several times and I've read every deflood thread on here. The first time I used the Mazda bulletin instructions. I was able to deflood my car after a few hours but that bulletin is too complicated for most cases. The other times, I deflooded using the shortened procedure that Decpticon alludes to above.


Just a few notes. The link given above is great but doesn't seem to have pictures. You might need some diagrams showing you where the fuse box (long slender black box in the engine compartment on driver side) and air pump (in engine compartment on passenger side) are. Do a search on here; the pics are either in another thread or in the Mazda bulletin.

When you take the fuse box cover/lid off, there is a diagram under the cover/lid identifying each fuse and its function. You're looking for fuel pump 20A.

Jump in car and begin cranking. Don't step on gas pedal; it won't do anything anyway because fuel is cut off. Crank for 6 to 10 seconds (don't worry, 10 sec won't burn out your starter), then wait 30 seconds as a rest, then begin cranking process again. Repeat cranking process around 5 to 8 times.

Leave the car and relax for around 20 to 30 min. Return to car and repeat cranking process for another 5 to 8 times. Get out of car and put fuel fuse back in and reconnect air pump connector.

Get back in car BUT this time, before beginning to crank, press gas pedal all the way down (this stops fuel from being injected). Begin cranking and slowly and gradually let off on the gas pedal. This will allow fuel to gradually enter the combustion chamber. You may have to try it a couple times as you get a feel but the engine should start to catch.

I pull the plugs hit them with copressed air and clean them up put them back in . pull the fuel pump fuse and try to start it up, it should run for about a minute with the fuse out. then put the fuse back and start it again.let it run for a while. after doing it 2-3 time u should learn that its a pain in the *** and not do it again

For most floods, don't need to pull the spark plugs out or clean them. That method takes a lot of time and is a pain. His car should start with the shortened method.

 

you know you can pull the plugs in less than ten minutes..

 

Not if you've never done it before without taking the tire off (obviously taking the tire off would take more than 10 min as well).
