DIY: Code your own key / remote

This information can be used to add a new key and / or remote (including 2005 retractable key / remote to 2004 cars) to your vehicle.

Two things to keep in mind-

Key programming-

You MUST have at least two existing keys in order to add another new key. This will not work if you only have one good key, & want to add a new key. If you only have one good key(or have lost all keys) you will need to go to the dealer.

Remote programming-

IMPORTANT- When the instructions indicate you must press the door switch 3 times, they mean the door ajar switch located on the rear door, just below the front door catch.

Enjoy!

great post, but I was just able to read the key programing. The last attachment only shows procedure 1 and 2 and no where says to press the door switch 3 times (procedure 5?). Could you point out in your attachment how to program the remote?

Thanks Mazda Monkey (and takahashi). Got the '05 Key/Remote this weekend. Programming went smoothly. I have an early build '04 RX8 (pre-order) in case anyone was wondering. So if it worked on my car I think it should work on any '04. Hardest part was probably finding a place to do the key cut. Ended up getting it cut at an Ace Hardware store on one of those key tracing (touch less) machines.

So the idea that I am getting, is that, if I only have one remaining valid key, and my valet key I cannot program my new retractable key without the Dealer's assistance with the WDS? Or is there a way other than the WDS to achieve this. Thanks

K1nG,

They need for VIN number just for data logging. Mazda obviously does not want to give a RX-8 chipped key to anyone. There is no "special" key for your car. Most RX-8 key should be generatic for all RX-8 models *(4 port or 6 port)

mercury273,

Valet key should have a chip in it since it can start a car. So theoretically you can use it as a 2nd coded key.

WDS DOES NOT code keys - it is simply bullshit and the identification tag is at your ignition of your car (not the WDS). If so WDS can start your car without your key and why do they want you to leave your set of keys behind for service then .

Hope this helps.

Voila, it worked and on the first try even

1 valid key
1 valet key
then the new flip one.

worked like a charm

If you only have one remaining key that starts the engine, WDS is the only way to program additional keys, can't do it yourself with only one good one.

FYI for those of you with the '05 key, or those replacing the remote... doing the key replacement procedure alone will not program the remote. To get that part working, you need to follow page 4 of the directions posted:

Okay, this is cool.
But if I want the new retractable key for my 04 car, do I just order a "blank" one from the dealer, get it cut somewhere, and then do the posted procedures?

Yes and yes. If you order it from a dealership and give them your VIN, they can ship it to you pre-cut. Then all you have to do is program the car to accept the key and the remote.

just coded my own 05 key thanks guys. the transmitter was the hardest part but ill give good instructions right here.

1 sit in car

2 open driver door

3 put the key in move it
to lock to on
to lock to on
to lock to on

theres a small button in the door jam with a rubber stopper on it press it 3 times

now check that the door buttons still work and lock and unlock the doors.

then press any button on your key fob twice. now be patient cuz it takes like 5 seconds for it to first work.

MAKE SURE YOU DO THIS ALL QUICKLY!!!! 30 secs and under.

Thumbs up 2005 key for my 2004 RX8

Just had my new "switch blade" key/remote cut at the dealership - they did it for FREE! I then quickly programmed the new key in the ignition in like 30 seconds thanks to the D.I.Y. here. Then I programmed the remote fob (attached to the new key) in like another 45 seconds. All my keys and remotes are working with my 8. This was the easiest upgrade by far thanks to the folks who posted to/on this D.I.Y.

What did you all pay for your keys?

I was charged separately for the key half, and the remote half, which plug together.

is the 05 RX folding key the same as the 05 Mazdaspeed MX-5? I'd like to order it for my 04 Mazdaspeed MX-5.
