Lambo Doors

Lambo Doors
Hello all-
I am conidering designing a lamborghini door conversion kit for the RX-8 similar to the kit found here:
http://www.importprecision.com/vls_gallery_rx7.htm
This kit will be custom designed exclusively for the 2004 RX-8. I will be working with experienced mechanical engineers and fellow electronic & computer engineers to design a state-of-the-art lamborghini door conversion "bolt-on" kit.
However, before making this kit too extreme, I would like to inquire on how many people would be interested in a kit like this. I have researched other kits on the market and so far there are only universal kits available for the RX-8. They require body shop experience and your own "ingenuity" to install. These generic kits may have many unforseen obstacles and were never designed with the RX-8 in mind. Unfortunately, Decah, the founders of the original VDC (Vertical Door Conversion) kit cannot justify building a kit yet as there's not yet enough demand.
I am planning on embedding some "smarts" into the kit so that it will have the capability of having the doors automatically open with the push of a button. Also, I will integrate the keyless entry remote in with the system so when you unlock a door (or both) using your remote, the vertical doors will automatically open up slow like (and MTVs "pimp my ride like" ) from up to 30 yards away.
Anybody interested? We plan on taking our time designing the kit using several computer design toolsets to do the job right. I can post pictures of the finished product.
Also please let me know if anyone has any other ideas I can integrate in with the kit. Thanks!

Breezy,
I am going to pass on a bit of experience from my years product development that you likely already know. Do not just ask a group of people if they are interested in a potential product and use their response as a basis for the actual demand. You must also mention costs! Once the cost is thrown out you will be surprised by how many potential customers will disappear.

I agree this poll is probably a bit premature as development hasn't begun yet. This is what I will do. Due to my own personal interest, I will get a finished product installed on the 8 and will post pictures and a video. Once the product is complete, and I have a ballpark idea of how much demand there is, I can come up with the price. As this kit has never before been custom designed for the 8, a price at this time would be just as premature as this poll. Kits on the market today sell around ~1500 (including the universal kits). I will try to bring down the price to ~1200 or less... Let's wait for the finished product.
Thanks for the replies so far. Do let me know if anybody has any other original ideas that I can integrate into the kit.

veilside has lambo doors for one of their RX-8's. someone should try and get in touc with them and see what they did. they are the only people that i have seen do lambo doors for an rx-8. just check to see if you can open the back door when the front door is up. it looks to be a close call

Sounds like a unique idea, can't picture Lambos on a 4 door though.

Wow Breezy,
8Dad actually sounds better than RX-8Dad, I'll have to consifer the new name. Also, I'm also disgusted at how good the Lambo doors look!!... I've definately been convinced. There's no way I could get the lil' lady to go for this Mod, but It looks absolutely worth the money for anyone who could afford it. Thanks Breezy for showing me the light!!!

How are you supposed to get in and out of the car with those doors - crawl? I don't get the appeal at all - those things will make getting in or out of the car very awkward.
Picture this - you cruise up in your RX-8, park, and raise the scissor doors. The crowd goes "Ooooh, aaaah". Then you try to get out - whack your head on the underside of the door, then half-squeeze / half-crawl out of the car. The crowd goes "BWAAAAHAHAHAHA!" and you feel like an idiot. Yeah, real cool!:p

Gordon

-ported and rebuilt engine with 3mm seals
-t62 turbo with custom exhaust manifold and front mount intercooler
-750cc inj primary, 1600cc secondary
-fuel system and lines
-act clutch and pressure plate
- Haltech E11
Almost done wiring the E11 and then it will go the Dyno for tuning. My goal is low 11's still keeping it some what of a street car.
Doing stuff to the RX8 has slowed down the RX7 project.

It looks sweet, an excellent touch on a show car, perhaps not something you'd want to put on your everyday drive to work car. I've seen a few cars take first place based mostly on the tricked out doors. I've seen Lambo Doors, and I've seen Suicide doors. This is the first car to ever have BOTH!! First place for originality, Best in show for being an 8.

Yes those veilside door do look awkward to squeeze in and out of - completely agree. We are going to try and make our doors as vertical as possible to minimize this annoyance. The more the doors can swing up and out towards the hood, the better. Personally, I like how the RX8 with all 4 doors open you can see straight though. We will try to preserve this look as much as safely possible. One advantage with vertical doors is that it allows you to get in and out of a tight spot without having to worry about slaming your door into a one car garage wall, another car etc. (Of course, everyone's carefull not to park to close to other vehicles as they could just as easily dent up your doors)

Breezy,
The best way to get the doors more vertical would be to have the door pivot on the hinge after it is at the top of the swing. I know it is extremely hard to understand this, but think of it this way.....Look at the pic of the red Rx8 with lambo doors....The top corner of the door (closest to the fender) stays in the same place. Now, the part where you see the arm of the hinge going to would have a telescopic rod,(or just a bar sliding through a bushing) on it so it can move further than the original arm can....... The top part lets the door rotate somewhat as the bottom is still moving upward......If you can understand this, it'll work....We designed one for my brother's prelude, but never ended up making it, so I know it'll work.
I may be able to do a drawing to further explain.
just my $.02

Personally I think its ugly, and ricey as hell...
If you notice Lamborghini has long, thin sweeping door, its meant to open that way, beautiful.
Now the RX, the door is high, its big... its beautiful as it is, but not standing on its hinges in the air.
I dont think you have ever seen a straight side view of the RX door swung up... maybe somone could photoshop that?
The one from Veilside show is at an angle, it doesnt really show the awkward girth of the door.
Not to mention the movement... Im pretty sure, it wont be straight up the air, it will be ejected out first, then swung out.
Hows the rear suicide door? Leave it as it is?
But of course judging from the response theres quite a few keen buyers here, it certainly is not everyone's cup of tea.
But I must admit that lambo door would be more useful in a real parking situation. As it is in the current RX, theres no way your rear passenger can enter when you are flanked with a car beside you... Well, you can, you can both squeeze into each other and slowly open both doors... But most of the time, you have to take the car out of the parking spot first before letting your rear passengers in.

I believe most people like the doors to come out parallel to the cars body, then rotate verically up out of the way. Trying to keep the door as vertical as possible. Not like the veilside in which these doors swing up at an angle. Of course, it is easier said than done.
What style to people prefer?

Kind of hard to decipher the drawing, but I think the first two arrows describe it. See text picture below:
Front ^
(RX-8) --> out | up (pivoting toward the front of the vehicle)
Back
Everyone: check out Supie.com and tell me which vehicle style of lambo doors is the best looking.
