Race Roots ignition coil review
I feel like it's about time to write my long over due review for the Race Roots Ignition coil upgrade kit.
First my car is a 2004 6speed about 78k miles on it. i used to daily drive the car. but since i got a job that's about an hour away from my house i got a commuter instead.
my original plugs and coil packs were completely shot, had about 30k on them. so instead of replacing them with the factory once i decided to go with the Race Roots ignition coilpack upgrade.
the package came really quick, lighting fast shipping. the package came in good shape as you can see in the pictures. Installation was pretty simple. For me i replaced the coil packs, the spark plug wires, and the spark plugs at once. so i put tape on the harness just so i know which harness is going to which spark plug. ( there's probably a smarter way but i was in a hurry didnt have much time to think)
i can immediately tell the difference between these coil packs compare to the old busted up old ones. I used to get around 13 mpg around the city. and about 20 mpg on freeway
so far the first tank i got 14.7 mpg with only city driving and canyon runs, no freeway at all. i am going to be going to a trackday on the 26th i will post freeway gas mileage after that.
over all i am really happy with the product, and would definitely recommend them to anyone. they are cheaper than the BHR ignition coil packs and pretty much the same thing.
i am going to upload some pictures in the next day or two just so ppl could see what the product looks like and installation!!

Awesome to hear that! I've dealt with Brice before and he was a pleasure to work with and is very helpful. I saw these when they first came out and was curious how they would hold up and compare to the BHR kit.

Pretty much the same thing as the BHR ignition? Does this kit use the same coil as the BHR kit? no. They are cheaper yes, pretty much the same thing? No. If you like this ignition kit fine, but don't just make **** up. The coils are LS2 coils but are used in the Z06? I wasn't aware the Z06 had an LS2 engine .

They're not the same coils. BHR chose not to use those for a reason...

Well according to a video by charles in his ignition thread, ls2 coils were used on 1997-2005 corvettes, GTOs, and avalanches. What kind of coils RR uses I don't know, but that claim seems right if these are ls2 coils.

The D585 (truck coil) is totally different than these. The D514-A may have been used on the Z06 but saying they are the same as the Yukon coil is just untrue. Plus they are not specific just to the LS2. I'm not saying which is better, but you can do your own research, it gets complicated.

By the time I had moved on to the second prototype in early '08, I was already using a different coil type:
By the time I had moved on to the production model, I was using yet a different coil type and the current production model uses yet another coil type.
So, the BHR and the RR aren't even remotely the same thing.

one thing that i think that is important to note and I have upmost respect for BOTH vendors, is that the bhr coils have the heatsink. I think that heatsink is a good thing to have.
Its well documented that the bhr coils ( Yukons) have the capacity to provide more power to the plug than the ls2 ones. Whether or not thats needed is another discussion.
Just this---there is a reason that GM added those heatsinks.
The ls2 coils may end up being just fine. I really dont know. But the bhr's are already proven.
Time will tell?

Also in reference to your smart *** comment about LS2 engine in a zo6, clearly you would understand that parts like ignition coils are used across multiple platforms hence the list of multiple cars. For example the Yukon coil (d585) is not just used in the Yukon but many other vehicles as well.
Lastly, any customer would get the same support if there was an issue, I don't ignore people for 3 years or anything like that so I am not sure why the need for snooty comments. Also there is a 2 year warranty on this product, if you cared to read all of the info and not just some of it.
Clearly, your grudge or whatever your problem with me is has come apparent on your naive comments.

Both the LS coils and the Yukon coil are great coils. I have used both in the past in boosted cars and neither have let me down. You can run more boost on the Yukon coils due to the higher milijules the coils puts out. However I cannot see how the LS coils would be a bad fit. I have run 22 psi on them in the past without a ignition amp. If you really want go over board throw some mercury coils on there.

Yeah, either one will work for most people, and there's no need to go overboard on some over-engineered bracket either, just some all-thread will do if you want to be **** about it. A pic of my own setup from way back when, I don't even bother with this any more or even strapping it down. They are essentially trapped in place once you bolt everything back up. In one iteration I just bolted the coils to each other in a row using small bolts by fastening them together from integral bracket to bracket and let them lay on top of the OE bracket. In another I just double-sided taped them together with a tie wrap around all four just as a backup, again just laying on top of the OE bracket. Never had any issue with racing on it that way. I don't care for the sharp 90 coil boot setup either (as shown). I like the long radius 90 degree LT1 coil boots the best, but they cost a lot more. There is nothing wrong with the std 45 deg LS2 boots either.

I don't think you need to hop all over chumma for his choice of his words. I do believe he understands they are not the same coil. I think the proper word he was looking for was Similar not the same, even though he used the context "basically the same" So he still is correct, you just wanted to get into a heated debate about nothing.

I don't have a grudge against you. I do think you are a shady dude who should not be trusted but that's my personal opinion of you and I formed that opinion all my own. My personal opinion of you has nothing to do with your ignition coils or any of your other products. This product may prove to be great and if that is the case then so be it. People can buy whatever they like, it's their money.
I am only making the point that it should be clear that this product is not a apples to apples comparison to the BHR kit.

last time I checked this was a forum for discussion. If you don't like what one member has to say about something then tough ****. The OP said these "are cheaper than the BHR ignition packs and basically the same thing". That is a false statement. They are not the same ignition coil, wires, etc. And a warranty doesn't mean **** if the person selling it is dishonest (my opinion).
Could this ignition kit be great and last just as long as the BHR kit? Sure, possibly. But only time will tell if this product is reliable and supported well.
