Taka's comeback was the ribbing equivalent of bringing a gun to a knife fight (i.e. easy shot) but I'm always happy to cop it from those I dish it out to.

I like to think of it as motivation for his next track day...

Thanks Andrew - great link and makes my challenge a lot clearer! Complex exercise. I will have a crack at it this weekend and let you know how I get on.

Tried to access the fuel pump today. Could not get the job done. No matter what I tried I could not budge the screwed cover. It's off to the dealer I go.

Sorry Andrew no update. I have been in the USA for the last week and will be here until after Easter. Willl have to arrange with my ever patient, understanding wife to get the car to Mazda in my absence. (I think you have one of these Dave?) I tell you though, it is the type of issue where you would like to stand over the dealer "mechanics" while the job was done. To leave it at the dealer exposes one to the risk of never knowing what really was the problem.
Interesting while over here in the USA I described the problem to a colleague who runs a BMW in SCCA events. He was of the opinion that it could have been related to getting the fuel across from one side of the tank to the other. I have no idea how this is achieved in our Mazdas. Do you have a view on this? Anyway I will STILL let you know how and when I get to the bottom of this. Cannot wait for the next rack day! Take care all.
Rod
p.s Still do not get NASCAR

I have the fuel pump plastic ring adapter made in CNC aluminium block. This can be used to open that ring and get the fuel pump out. The work shop charged me 300 bux to custom made this thing, you can see it in the FS section. Mazda told my mechanics the way Mazda takes it off is "hack" "break" it off and replace it with a new one that costs like 1xx although there is a tool listed in the workshop manual which they dont have and how they get the new one back on ? hack it back with a tool and hammer.. which wont be seal i believe.. so.. instead of worrying it wont be sealed properly.. he offer to make me a adapter that could open the fuel pump.. this is all information told to me by my mechanics if anything is incorrect dont blame me =p.. but yeh.. i watched him open my fuel pump with that adapter that has special pattern to twist it open..

Pictures can be found here https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-parts-sale-wanted-44/fs-special-fuel-pump-key-must-need-change-fuel-pump-140637/
in the FS secion.. Tell me if you are interested, item located in melb.

Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. The interesting bit is not knowing which one I'm gonna get until the damage is done.

Mind you, I'm a big fan of the motto that it is easier to get forgiveness than permission.

This is kinda related to what I thought the problem may have been - some kind of fuel starvation thing. Keep us posted.

And agreed re: Nascar - I was hoping someone who has seen it live would have a different view but obviously not...
