8.5" rims and 235/40/18's - Rims too big?
I was just wondering if anyone here has experience using 235's and 8.5" rims? (Planning to pick the Goodyear F1 GS-D3's in 235 at approx $300 a pop VS 390$ for the 245's.)
I have asked several people (thanks Kall!) on their opinions and they recommend the 245's on the 8.5"s which makes sense but I don't know if I can afford the extra $300+ on the 245's over the 235's which could go towards a trip to Europe.
Will the rims look too big on the tyres?
I'm aware of all the negatives of 235's such as speedo reading, possible illegality etc but am aware many of you have 235's on the stock 8" regardless.
I have been to the carbible site (Excellent site) and the calculator in the Wheel and Tyre Bible recommends an 8" up to 9.5" but want to know if anyone has any practical advice.

I am planning to buy some new rims and tyres on the weekend and find that there is a much wider range of rims in the 8.5" category.

you may aswell stay 225's if thats the case. I used to have my 8.5inch rims on the 225's (OEMs) its still okay they fit. and u wont have the negatives the speedo being out of whack. the rims wont look to big. if you look at my old old olddd pix of my car when I first got my other rims, they were on the 225 OEM's. they fit fine. U couldnt even tell the difference. I then bought the 245s because at the time i buying my rims the tyres still had plenty of tread so I didnt bother replacing tyres then.

I have 235's on 8.5 rims and think they work great. IMHO, it maintains the sharpness of turn in that some felt they lost by going to 245's (admittedly on the OEM rims). In other words, I've got a slightly wider footprint but have maintained the 'just right' fit that the 225's give to the 8.0 OEM's.
There's a few pics of my car on the site if you want to see how they look.
However, you could fit either 225's or 245's if you wanted, as Kall and Eric have said.

I had 245's on the OEM rim (Yoko EVS100)...not nice ....lost the sharpness of the OEM 040 tyres. I replaced these with 235's fitted to a 8" BBS wheel. The tyres were 040's again, and these are much cheaper in this size than 225's because 235/40x18 is the common size for certain HSV/FPV models.
