Air filters

Has anyone tried to upgarde thier air filters.

I understand you can purchase upgrade the paper filter to a washable type or you can go for the full upgrade with a typhoon intake system.

For my money...

I would wait. The stock air intake is very well designed. It is a true Cold Air Intake.

Regarding efficiency of the element. The stock paper element is about 30% larger in size than the equivalent cleaner on a 5.7L Chev Commodore, that put out over 300kW. So I don't believe there is much to gained there.

And the training manual says if the customers car is idleing poorly, and an wet element filter is in use, and/or a pod-stye intake, then replace it with the stock parts. The MAF (Mass Air Flow) meter is very sensitive to changes.

Cheers,
Hymee.

But for your money...

Hymee,

Any other suggestions to increase induction noise instead?
I'm a bit of a "automobile audiophile" and I don't mean car audio.

If you just want induction noise - PM Wildcard. He has a RE unit for sale.

Cheers,
Hymee.

Yes, my rotary extreme intake is for sale. It makes a nice growl, but combined with my Hymee exhaust, the overall result was a little too loud for my liking, so I took it out. It was only in my car for a week.

The intake cost me almost $600 to land here form the US, but I'm selling it for $300. PM me if you are interested. It's a quality product and effectively it's still brand new.

I actually sold it (I thought) a month ago, but since the buyer hasn't shown up yet to collect it, I guess it's back on the market.

I've called up Rocket Industries to order a K&N intake system for my rx8. Apparently its the 1st one to officially land in Australia. Pricing is simular to 350z intake system, $400. Not sure if i should wait, dying for one. Importing one might even be cheaper i bet.

Importing is actually very expensive. Shipping is typically US$50-$100. You will also have to pay 15% duty for car accessories and then ANOTHER 10% GST on the cost of the product + shipping + duty. Convert that all to US$ as well. Believe me, it sucks dude. Hence why my US$260 intake actually cost me close to A$600.

Hymee,

How about developing some sort of larger capacity cold air feed to replace the little pipe behind the front bar?

Maybe something like the SS Induction kit for the Commodores but placed upside down, feeding from behind the number plate?

I didn't/wouldn't waste my money on the SS inductions kit anyway. I made my own 100mm TB pipe (another true Hymee special!), and used a VY/Monaro CAI. I have had reports of the SS inductions kit making them go backwards, but I have no proof of that.

My car made 235kW at the wheels, which was the highest (I am told) "MAFed" Commodore around. But the tune was a little bit too close to the edge. MAF-less tunes are now very popular on the LS1's. But the last MAF-less one I saw on a dyno was only a bit over 230, stock internals.

It will only be necessary to enlarge that hole, if the MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) drops significantly below atmospheric at full load/WOT. Unfortunately, the RX-8 does not have a built in MAP sensor, so I can't get a reading from ODBII, but one could hook a pressure/vacuum gauge up somewhere. Normally Atmo is about 100kPa, and if you can get to 99kPa MAP on a NA engine, there is not much more to be got.

So until we proove "that little pipe" is causing a restriction...

Cheers,
Hymee.
