Australia's first RX-8 was....

......a Velocity Red cloth pack six speed .

Built on 24th April 2003, VIN# 00100007. I discovered this bit of RX-8 trivia whilst searching for VIN info on the starter motor. The second RX-8 that found it's way onto the Australian market was a Winning Blue cloth pack six speed...VIN# 00100008. And the third was a Titanium leather pack auto....VIN# 00100009.

So there you go.......a nice bit of RX-8 history has been uncovered .

Cheers,
Gomez.

That IS interesting - I had always assumed that cars were assembled in batches --

In the main part of the factory the bodies are assembled using welding robots... Ah honourable paint master, what colour are we doing today... Looks like we have lots of tins of red... Red car bodies are painted until 1pm, Yellow from 13:00 to 13:10 etc The car bodies are then placed on gaint shelving until assembly is required.

Okay honourable workers, this morning we build for Australia. They need 65 Reds, 30 Winning Blue, 2 Yellow and... Let's start with the leather packs and at 10am we cut over to poverty packs... Now honourable worker no 5543, please remember not to put the fog lights on the poverty packs...

Unless.......

They are running parallel lines and the numbers are allocated (and computers programmed) as they come off the line...

Interesting..

Hmm, I'm way down the track... #242. So it looks like all you leatheries are going to have to shed 16.5kg to get down to stripped down performance condition.

16.5 kg is still 16.5 kg, baby. They say the XR8 is a pig because it's engine weighs 50kg more than the XR6T. Face it....you drive a porker.... .

i'd pick a leather pack anyday..... (yes, i got stuck with a pov pack)
if anyone is so worry about the extra weight/performance lost, why buy the RX-8 in the first place? its a luxury sports car at the end of the day....

/me runs away and put the flame suit on

16.5 kgs is alot when trying to compete on a track, many people still pay thousands to get rid of extra kilos from their car by exchanging parts to carbon fibre, although they save only a 3-4kilos from each part but it still helps.

weight spoils everything on a track. handling, lost of power, etc....

but in everyday use, i guess there is no difference

OK, there's so many other things that affect race times, but all things being equal, if you had wrung the last out of your vehicle, and you had a choice between a skinny runt to drive your car, and a guy who thought the 4 food groups were Maccas, KFC, Dominos and Eagle Boys, then who are you going to pick?

Actually, if you think about it, the nominal mass of the car is about 1350kg, so 16.5kg is more than 1%. Since the energy input to a moving object is directly proportional to its mass*, it would make a small but finite difference.

*Kinetic energy = (mass*velocity^2)/2
so:
velocity = SQRT(2*Kinetic energy/mass)

Blokes wear shorts and sometimes we even drive home from a day on the coast in our togs - the extra fast pov pack has never shinged a hair on my pins...
