Why would that be any different to the RPM limiter cutting fuel?

Because you can run lean towards the end. Think of it like fuel surge - if you're lucky the engine just cuts out. If you're unlucky the pump sucks both fuel and air and you say goodbye to your motor.

I've fuel surged my motor about 5 or 6 times without drama, but others have been far less fortunate.

BTW, I don't really get why you guys get upset over fuel consumption. Seen the latest wheels? Their long term averages from the test fleet:
Daihatsu Copen 10l/100km
Saab ?9-3? slurped 16l/100km

I'm not upset over consumption.

I just don't understand the difference between the "super lean" state my engine goes into when the RPM limiter kicks in?

because when the limiter cuts= zero fuel it knows the fuel is lean. no fuel in no bang.

when you starve the injectors the engine thinks it's getting 25ms worth of fuel but is only getting 10ms worth; lean mixture no timing correction bang!

Another persepective ...

I believe the fuel productivity (its hardly economy so why should I pretend) is actually a ploy by Mazda to promote the RX8. My daily trip to and from Sydney is around 70-100km (depending if I go the fun or boring way) so I get to drop in to a fuel station (again, why call them servo's as they dont give any!) every 4-5 days.

Almost every time I stop I get someone wanting to chat about the car, whats is she like? , how does she go mate? .. any sub woofers baby? etc etc etcI feel like a mobile ad ...

And of couse .. I LOVE IT !!!!!!!!

BTW .. pre tax fuel is sooooooooooo cheap

Quite an expensive ego trip, but hey, those type of people keep the car makers in business.

Back on topic, Mazda does claim a 30% reduction in consumption, and I'm not too sure that's right either.

A friend of my cousins has an imported Series 8 RX7 and that thing really chews through the juice quite quickly.

However only at a slightly more marginal rate then the 8 does, not at 30% more, maybe at 10-15% perhaps.

I suppose it's difficult to compare, but it makes you wonder whether Mazda's Technical department or the Marketing department comes up with these claims?
