Brake pad life?

I noted that in a recent post that Missy K had changed brake pads three times. I've just had my 60k service, and the report was that my pads are in good shape. Although I realize that higher brake wear can be anticipated when tracking the car, is there any feel out there for what might be considered average brake life under normal road driving?

I must admit that I'm a passionate stirrer of the gear box, and believe that brakes are for wimps, deserving of only the lightest of touches in normal driving circumstances.

BTW, my pads have only very rarely squeaked.

I don't think brake wears too much in normal circumstances. We are not allow to drive fast at all in Victoria. It is so slow here we can open the door, run in front of the car and push it to stop. . It should be easy to do 60K+ on a set of pads.

Having said that, embedding brake pads are not easy thing to do So keep the old pad as long as possible, but I will tend to change it if more than 50% worn.

Same here. My pads have 55,000 k's on them and will last forever. They have never squeaked. Braking is a girly habit.

Not on a track it's not.

I've never had squeaking or squealing either.

Although I always downchange, I tend to think the brakes are there, they work damn well, so why not use them.

....You'd be surprised at how many Formula 1 drivers think brakes are for stopping....
The above quote is attributed to Mario Andretti...

I had my OEM pads changed to EBC Red at all 4 corners at 12,000k's and they were about 1/4 - 1/3 used. I still have them in case of emergencies, but I am now on 23,000ks and have doen 4 track sessions. Last I looked they were about 50% used. Not sure that helps but imho OEM pads are very good and should last etween 60-80,000k's

Cheers

Andrew

He only did a few NASCAR races, but one of them was the Daytona 500......which he won. Spent a little time in F1 you know. Won the F1 drivers championship in 1978. He was no plodder. Named "Racing Driver of the Century".

From wikipedia:

During his career, Andretti won four IndyCar titles, the 1978 Formula One World Championship, and the 1979 IROC championship. To date, he remains the only driver ever to win the Indianapolis 500 (1969), the Daytona 500 (1967), and the Formula One World Championship.

From wikipedia:
I'm aware of his career and he was obviously a world-class steerer but I'm always extremely wary of sportsmen "of the century" or "best ever". Different eras produce people who are good at what they do - picking one over the others is sentimentality gone wild.

And I still think his quote, while amusing, is misleading, disingenuous, chest-thumping bullshit.

I think a certain J.M Fangio, A Senna or M Schumacher (although more 21st century for him) might disagree with that assessment.

Let me guess named by a panel of American F1 experts.

With this quote you seemed to indicate you thought he was "only" a NASCAR racer. I wanted to set the record straight, so I expanded a little on on his racing career. He barely raced NASCAR at all.

Four-time Champ Car National Champion (1965, 1966, 1969, 1984)
Formula One World Champion (1978)
Daytona 500 winner (1967)
Indy 500 winner (1969)
Three-time Indy 500 pole winner (1966, 1967, 1987)
Three-time 12 Hours of Sebring winner (1967, 1970, 1972)
USAC National Dirt Track champion (1974)
International Race of Champions titlist (1979)
Named Driver of the Year in three different decades (1967, 1978, 1984)
Named Driver of the Quarter Century (1992) by vote of past Drivers of the Year and panel of 12 journalists
All-time leader in Champ Car pole positions won (67)
All-time Champ Car lap leader (7,587)
All-time record holder for Champ Car starts (407)
All-time leader in wire-to-wire Champ Car victories (14)
Only driver ever to win Champ Car races in four decades
Only driver ever to win races in five decades
Oldest race winner in recorded Champ Car history with 1993 victory at Phoenix (53 years, 34 days)
Named Driver of the Century by The Associated Press (December 10, 1999), tying with A.J. Foyt for this title
Named Driver of the Century by RACER magazine (January, 2000)
Named Greatest American Driver Ever by RACER magazine (May, 2002)
From 1961 through 2000, competed in 879 races, had 111 wins and 109 poles in all forms of motorsports

Now whether you consider him to be the greatest racer ever or not, you can't question his record....or his versatility. He won on dirt, in F1, in NASCAR, in INDY cars, in endurance racing.....he won races in five separate decades.

Schumacher was just a short term single series specialist. And a cheat as well.

Point taken but I still think the quote attributed to him is bollocks. Using engine braking is fine up to a point but if you're driving hard enough, the middle pedal is well worth finding.

You're either baiting the hook for me or being deliberately simplistic. You're also ignoring Schumacher's pre-F1 career.

He may have been involved in his fair share of dubious 'incidents', but his ability, particularly in the wet, should no longer be in question.

For reasons stated earlier, I'd never say he was the best or any of that guff, but he has dominated his era in one of the most difficult motorsport categories there is. IMHO, that deserves a modicum of respect, whatever your view of his sense of sportsmanship.

FYI - my front pads were replaced at 40k (but the car's first 10k were done as a demonstrator). The rears (and the new fronts) should last a lot longer than that, although probably not if I continue the track days!
