My tyres at 26000km still seem to be doing a good job should be good for another 20,000km i hope.
As jack said at 50 years of age we know how to drive without constantly abusing the tyres with rapid acceleration and needless hard braking . :D
I was also at Wakefield and i drive my car in a spirited fashion , sometimes to spirited for my own good .

Taka, it is strict and not just an ACT thing, so here goes:
Tyres are governed by the Australian Design Rules and are also subject to individual State regs. However, the following is a list of the minimum requirements for alternative wheel & tyres for Australian States & territories. These requirements apply to passenger cars unless otherwise stated. O.E. size refers to any tyre size listed on the vehicle's tyre placard. An alternative tyre size is a tyre's size that is not listed on the vehicle's tyre placard. Fitment of wheels & tyres that do not meet these requirements require an engineering certificate to be a legal fitment.
New South Wales: The overall diameter of alternative tyres must be not more than 15mm larger than the largest O.E. size or 15mm smaller than the smallest O.E. size. Minimum speed rating is N (140 kph).
Victoria: The overall diameter of alternative tyres must be not more than 15mm larger than the largest O.E. size. Minimum speed rating is equivalent to the highest state speed limit, which is 110kph or K.
Queensland: The overall diameter of alternative tyres must be not more than 15mm larger than the largest O.E. size or 26mm smaller than the smallest O.E. size. Minimum speed rating is N (140 kph).
South Australia: The overall diameter of alternative tyres must be not more than 15mm larger than the largest O.E. size or 15mm smaller than the smallest O.E. size. Minimum speed rating is S (180 kph) for new tyres fitted to passenger cars or 140 kph (N) for retreads. Minimum speed rating for four wheel drives is 130 kph (M).
West Australia: The overall diameter of alternative tyres must be not more than 15mm larger than the largest O.E. size or 15mm smaller than the smallest O.E. size. Minimum speed rating is S (180 kph) for new tyres fitted to passenger cars (or the vehicle's top speed if lower than 180kph), or 140 kph (N) for retreads. Minimum speed rating for four wheel drives is N or 140 kph.
Tasmania: No specific ruling in maximum or minimum overall diameters of alternative wheels & tyres, Except that both must comply with Australian Tyre & Rim Association standards. The speed rating must be equal to or better than the vehicle's top speed.
Australian Capital Territory: The overall diameter of alternative tyres must be not more than 15mm larger than the largest O.E. size or 26mm smaller than the smallest O.E. size. Minimum speed rating is S (180 kph) for new tyres fitted to passenger cars or 140 kph (N) for retreads. Minimum speed rating for four wheel drives is 140 kph (N).
Northern Territory: The overall diameter of alternative tyres must be not more than 15mm larger than the largest O.E. size. Minimum speed rating is that stated on the tyre placard.
New Zealand: The overall diameter of alternative tyres must not be more than 15 mm larger than the average sheep's ***** in repose

Oh thx timbo. Engineering cert will not worth the money. Sounds like I have up my tyre in my Civic by 30mm before. I could have cop a big fine hehe :D
Stupid rule I have to say. The alternative size for most cars >200mm will be upsized by more than 15mm for a relatively comparable circumferance. Think about this. It is such an old rule. None of the new middle size sedan nowadays have <200mm tyre.
I am more than happy to stick with 225 but there is still not much choice out there. I am happy with stick with RE040 as I can afford to buy 1/2 a set and save up for a set of rim and semislick. No point to drive expensive tire but I hope there is still a tyre that quieter than 040 but still grip as well.

Notwithstanding the supply problem, I'm pretty happy with the stock tyres. Gone past 35,000 km including 2 track days and 2 trips to the drags. Thats is pretty impressive IMHO. I'm pretty sure they won't quite see 40,000 km though.

Got my new Yokohama AVS ES100s fitted on Sat... awesome tyres... rear grip is amazing! Look awesome too. Will get some pics up as soon as I've redone my home network.

Hymee, important question, how do you access your tyre. Not with the arrow on the size I hope coz when that happens it is not safe.
Does the RE040 has less grip when half worn? Or it is just me? I was talking to lexic on Sunday that it was me not my rear that making the car tail happy

As for mileage, I'm replacing my stock Potenza's at about 35,000km.
I'm looking to replace my stock Potenza RE040s with Yokohama's AVS V550 245/40R18 91Y. It's a little bit smaller and alters the speedo by only 1%. It's their quiet performer - I'm weary of tyre roar.
