Yes I think I totally misunderstood the issue and now DRMH's point is even more relevant. As ELITE-RX8 mentioned, the coils are sealed against water, this means that no air flows through and they dont cool to well.

I think the issue should be how to get more air to the coils for when they are at full duty.

Hmm, high rpm, huh??

Well, I suppose it's fair to say mine doesn't exactly live under 4K. It gets revved hard whenever I drive it and of course has now spent some time on tracks getting thrashed hard.

Still, I would have thought Mazda's pre-production testing at high rpms would have revealed this problem. Perhaps they just didn't do enough kms. There's always something that only real world driving will reveal...

Yes and I honestly doubt that the sort of driving we do is the sort of testing mazda does.

Well ... they're consistent. You could almost safely say all mazda ignition systems are consistently crap. All four mazdas that my family have owned (not including my RX8) have all had premature coil problems ... the MX6 goes through them like they're out of season, but aftermarket stuff lasts a lot longer, likewise with the 323 and the old 626.

So yer, I guess we just need to wait for aftermarket options that don't cost an arm and a leg!

Although I said Taka could have the set coming from the US, I'm seriously starting to think about keeping them on the shelf at home as spares. Who knows how long the new set will last???

Order them Taka. I'm keeping mine just in case. Sorry to muck you around. They only take a week if you pay for priority mail.

HAHA yeah I reckon they are just slightly baked!

I have to ask though, from your join date and avatar, I am guessing they are original 03 coils and you do a lot of track work?

I put this in the other coils thread, but its been moved to the DIY section - might have more luck here! anyone help?

"don't s'pose anyone has a spare set of coils! ):

Since Monday (see post above) the missing got progressively worse until today (Friday) it wouldn't clear - wasn't game to keep driving so had the car towed to the dealer to make sure of the problem. Sure enough - 4 new coils needed - my coils left the US on Tuesday so hopefully should be here next week sometime, but with Christmas coming I have a bad feeling about the postal service!

So if anyone is interested in "dealing" in a spare set with me replacing them when mine get here please drop me a PM!"

No problem...First I was agreeing that your coils were very bad.

2nd I was asking if those coils were the original coils you got with your car. I also asked if you do a lot of track work.

Cheers

Thanks for this informative thread.

I've got a July 2003 build RX8 and it's been misbehaving lately (about 40k, rough idle, appears to be missing at times, excessive fuel consumption, lack of power at times) - so I 've placed an order for the coils via Mazda Online - can't hurt to have them handy!

Once I get them I'll see if I'm game enough to replace them.

Cheers,

Pappy

Pappy, you are back in Australia. Welcome.

Got my coil sitting in the lounge room. Do not see the reason to use it YET!
