i have encountered one of these stobie poles before, i'll set the scene. Country footy match in outback SA and reversing ute backwards from feild. Pole jumps out of no where and 'smash'. Made even worse by all the half tanked bogans around....lol. Stay away from them they are bad news!!

I agree 38k was a bit steep for a 70000km RX8 from a dealer, considering there was another RX-8 being sold privately, same year under 50000km. But I am in no rush!
I also have been considering buying from Melbourne, just could be a bit expensive to go out there, have a look, be dissatisfied, then come home again. I think I will try locally until I start getting desperate!
Oh BTW, I reckon stobie poles were invented as the standard wooden telegraph poles snapped too readily when crashed into. You need something made from concrete and reinforced with two steel beams to really stuff you up when you hit it...just to be sure.

Advice from a fellow Adelaidean
Hi Rimsey,
As others have said to you $38 for a car that age is too much. Check out RedBook.com.au and have a look at what they say is average. There are plenty out there...I have seen several in yards. There is a nice VR one in the SH yard at Paradise Mazda, they are the only Mazda dealer in Adelaide I would bother with. Buy from a Mazda dealer if you can as they "understand" the cars. Just to give you an idea I was thinking about selling mine....fleeting thought, it's done 35,500kms is immaculate and I was thinking about $42,000. So don't rush, be patient and take the guys advice on here as given it's not worth rushing and buyinf something that will only disappoint. Believe you me, I can't sell mine as there is nothing else I would rather be driving and I test drive a lot of cars!! Good luck and if you need any help PM me and I will try and assist where I can.
Cheers

Thanks RC...might just do that!
I have another question for the RX8 "Brains Trust"...if I find an RX8 that is out of warranty, but want to get it checked out, can a Mazda dealer provide that service if the seller is happy for it to be done, or is it something the RAA/RAQ/NRMA can do and provide a good critical analysis of the car?
In the past I have used the RAA...but never on a rotary, are they capable of looking at engine compression etc?
Cheers (& thanks for all your help so far!)

I would be getting someone like the RAA to look at it. Its a standard service they provide and would be able to do it a lot cheaper than a Dealer. I would however get the VIN of the car and ask a reliable dealer to have a look at what recalls/campaigns have/haven't been done.

Get someone to drive the car who knows RX8,S THEY WILL QUICKLY TELL YOU IF ITS ANY GOOD .
Buying a car from a rotary enthusiast / forum member with a service history is not a bad option .

Ben, but it could be equally a bad option to buy from a rotary enthusiast as well ...
... it all depends.
I say get one that's stock, looked after, full service history, take it to a mechanic for a compression test, chassis check etc. and make up your mind from there. If you get RACV to test it they guarantee it for a period of time after you get it checked out so that may be a good option for piece of mind.
If you REALLY want, you can go see a rotary specialist ... but at the end of the day most mechanics should have an understanding as to how the engine works ... if they don't they're obviously pre-neolithic.

I think in all cases, and especially for a rotary, the service history may be the most important factor when choosing a car.
Certainly it's high on my list.

After having a look at all the Rx-8's for sale across the country
I have adjusted my asking price down to $34,000.
Good price for low 48,000km's, only cheaper 8's all have major kilometres
on them. Make a great starter for turbo project as it already has the
Hymee full stainless steeel system installed.
Has all recall's done and up to date, so no worries with starter's, mount's,
heat shields etc...and has had Mazda-service's every 6 months since new.
Forum members...mention the forum for a further $500 discount.
Photo's and further description here...

Its the driest state/lowest humidity in Australia....
If any car has rust it has rust, all Mazda's sold in Australia have a 6 Year body protection warranty, which includes rust, and is transferable.
The only thing that will knock that warranty out is if the car has been 'crash repaired' in the location of any rust.
If you want a compression test done on a Rotary (RX-8) go to a GOOD Mazda dealer as they have the correct equipment to measure it, "Compression testers" for piston engines are not the same.

BTW, The ONLY reliable dealer that is the best in metro Adelaide is Paradise Motors, Paradise.
They are the oldest in SA and the most awarded dealer in Australia..they have been a Mazda Dealer for 30 years.
Go and ask for Peter McKeo he is their Operations Manager (Service and Parts).

What "rising damp" problems do you think Adelaide has, what a load of BS @crap..

Yes, a 6 year body warranty is useful if you get rid of your car within 6 years ... but what happens if you want to keep it until the car's 10-15 years old?

So in Adelaide the rising water table and "salt damp" comes up through the ground, seeps into your tyres and then..bang into your body work...or hang on, the salt gets flicked up by the tyres!...
If any place is cold and wet that would be Metro Melbourne, 4 seasons in one day.
I do not know of ANY car that does not have some sort of rust in it at 10 or 12 years of age.

Actually, yer, that's the theory! That and the damp you get in the morning that rises from the ground ... surely you learnt about all of that at school!
I wasn't talking about superficial rust Ash!

Firstly, I want to thank everyone for their advice...it has been really useful!
Secondly, I am now the proud owner of a 2003 black RX-8 (with leather) with reasonably low kms. Picked it up yesterday...runs great! All your advice led to this car which I am sure to enjoy for many years to come!
I will post pics when the sun comes out...Adelaide seems a little dark at the moment!
Cheers

PS. I think I am allowed to say Zoom-Zoom (just this once!)
