The timed thing can be official or unofficial.
The trouble for timing is: Who is going to sit in the box to time (even it is automatic - someone has to take care of it when it stalls) and not going to the track. I wouldn't.
As we hire the track out, we will own the track and put it as an organised open session. Some people will want more laps than others.
For me I am not ready to be timed until the late arvo. I can time it myself in the long straight with my PDA.

I'm just happy to tootle along around the track at a speed I feel comfortable with, ie. I won't be pushing any boundaries but I won't be setting any world records either.

That's exactly what we should all be doing, and not let anyone convince us to go faster than what we are comfortable!
