Which colour is the safest?

The short answer is: yellow! L&L can rejoice. Black is the most dangerous, reports NRMA Insurance in a posting today on The Australian website. Not only does black feature in a proportionately higher number of accidents, repair costs are 30% higher, suggesting more serious accidents.

This may be an ominous warning for owners of black cars - be prepared for higher insurance rates!

Labrat

In Europe people who drive Yellow cars already pay less in insurance , as they have known for a long time that Yellow is the safest colour .

Hopefully my insurance company will give me a rebate if they decide to bring in the European insurance system based on colour of car as a safety standard.

cheers

Yellow is the safest in terms of being the easiest colour to see on the road.......but it also attracts undue attention! It's easier for Officer Dibbles to pick you out.....and that may have repercussions come time to send a cheque into your friendly neighbourhood insurance company!

Haha... funny you mention it ...

Firstly, I had a maniac try to run me off the road, although, I don't think that had anything to do with colour...

Secondly, just got my renewal forms for my insurance (can't believe it's been a year!)... and my insurance DROPPED by over 30%! I know, I nearly fell off my balcony! So now, for a 26 y/o, I'm paying a smidge over $1000 through AAMI.

BTW, Yellow in the RX-8 would be the safest because no one wants to be seen within 100 metres of one... so no chance of hitting anyone else on the roads DD

I work for NRMA (IT) and you would be amazed at how much time and money they spent to come up with this info. Perhaps they are charging extra for black to make up the money spent ... lol

I believe that insurance companies first started using actuarial tables in the 1700's. If you're in the insurance business, gathering this sort of data is what you do to manage risk. It's no different than for bookies charting the form of horses. The article in The Australian didn't say that they were going to charge more, but that may be a reasonable assumption once they gather more data.

I didn't choose yellow, we got a red one, which is sort of middle of the road on the safety level. Next time you're out at twilight (and especially in cloudy weather), see how the colours of some cars seem to blend into the road. I ride a bike for exercise, and I always try to wear my brightest cycling tops when it's dark or cloudy.

Maybe I will ride with you one day labrat... I love yellow but not my car mate...

It is still interesting that insurance company will charge more for colour...
I saw on the Herald Sun recently saying that 30% of new car sale is black car! It is certainly a "hit" colour :D

BTW I wish there were white RX-8's

The article didn't say that insurance companies would charge more for black; they simply reported the results of NRMA research. The inference is mine, but L&L says they already have cheaper premiums for yellow cars in Europe.

The colour of car is not a relevent question on any Australian Manufactured Insurance policy - YET!

There is no project in the pipeline at NRMA to add colour into the risk tables.

Silver cars are the safest on the road

13:53 19 December 03

NewScientist.com news service

Silver cars are much less likely to be involved in a serious crash than cars of other colours, suggests a new study of over 1000 cars.

People driving in silver cars were 50 per cent less likely to suffer serious injury in a crash compared with drivers of white cars, the research in New Zealand found.

White, yellow, grey, red and blue cars carried about the same risk of injury. But those taking to the roads in black, brown or green cars were twice as likely to suffer a crash with serious injury.
