Imports are imports, no matter where they come from. Postage/shipping may be cheaper from Japan, but they will still slog you for duty and GST just the same.
Takahashi, was your fog light under A$200? That would be why you didn't pay any tax.
My RE intake is coming from somewhere in California called El Cerrito. Maybe they can write the invoice in Mexican!

There's nothing to stop you getting a friend in the US to order one, then he onsells it to you. Of course given that it's second hand by the time it reaches you, your friend can legitimately write down the cost. Best to take it out of the packet first!

I spoke to Australian customs today about importing a Borla exhaust from the States to see if it would attract any duty or GST. Here is how the system works:
If the value of the goods you are bringing in to Australia are worth more than $250 if sent by air/sea courier (Fedex etc) or $1000 if sent by post, you are liable to pay duty and GST. Unfortunately, the Borla exhaust is too big to be sent by post, so here is what you would be up for to import a Borla exhaust:
15% duty on the value of the import.
A $50 admin fee charged by customs.
10% GST on the grand total of the value of your import + the $50 fee + the cost of the courier.
Here is an example if I lost anyone:
Borla exhaust $ 815 (US$595 - the asking price)
+ $ 122 (15% duty)
+ $ 50 (admin fee)
+ $ 343 (US$250 for Fedex shipping)
= $1330
x 1.10 (10%GST)
= $1463
All of a sudden, an $800 exhaust got mighty expensive.
Needless to say, I've given up on going this way now and will have to look locally for something similar.
For all future importers of RX-8 bits, be aware that if the item you are after is too big to be sent in the mail, you will be liable for a lot more taxes than you may have anticipated. I'm thinking body kits etc may be a killer here. Smaller parts like Canzoomers ECU mod or intakes etc should be okay, provided they fit in the post and don't exceed A$1000 value.
Bummer dude.

But you are correct that what you see in USD on the website, is not what you end up paying. Not only that but the risk you take on is huge given that:
a) A US Company will have no compulsion legally to send you what you pay for (no coverage for Fair Trading laws),
b) Purchases from overseas usually does not get covered for transit insurance
c) Payment by CC has a fairly hefty bank change associated with it, as well as a poor exchange rate.
By buying from a local distributor, you don't suffer these issues. Google "Borla Australia" without the quotes for a selection. Make sure it is in fact an Australian supplier, and ensure prices include GST. Some even include shipping in the price to keep it simple... Ensure they include freight insurance, and honour the manufacturers warranty.
Just my 2c worth, as I'm in the business

Wow so much wrong with above post..
You can import anything new into Australia provided it is not above $1000 AUD total value.
Most payment methods incur a currency conversion fee of 3%, but GE 28 Degree Mastercard has no fees at all, but a 20% annual CC interest rate.
If you pay by CC you are protected (even internationally now days) by charge-back to merchant if you do not receive goods after 60 days usually, you have up to 120 days to claim a charge-back.
You can request insurance if you wish, like any other shipping method.
The Sender does not have to include a bill of sale or invoice with goods, as long as they declare at about $900 USD to Australia you are OK, there are NO taxes or Duty or GST/VAT.
Just make sure the goods are declared as ''NEW AUTO PARTS'', otherwise they can be opened by customs to inspect and or quarantined, (if used parts with soil/dirt on them) you will be charged an inspection fee either way once opened.
And I import about 3 shipments monthly by UPS, USPS, FedEx, DHL, Royal Mail, and have never been charged for any duty/tax or GST on final delivery inside Australia.
