"Rice-burners' was originally the description given by Hells Angels riding Harleys when the first large Japanese bikes appeared in the early 70's -- the Honda 750s and Kawasaki 500s, typically -- which, on any objective performance measure outclassed the Harleys.
As to a definition? Well, you know it when you see it
Somewhere in Sydney there is some sad bastard driving a hot metallic orange Toyota Avalon, with an obscene rear wing and ultra bling oversize chrome wheels. ![Puke](https://www.rx8club.com/images/smilies/puke.gif)
And in France I saw a Citroen Saxo -- bright yellow, with a large wing above the rear hatch, a deep front dam, widened/rolled arches and again, bling chrome wheels -- problem was, the car sounded like, smelt like, and went like it was powered by the stock standard 1.4 diesel.![EEK!](https://www.rx8club.com/images/smilies/eek.gif)
There can be no argument: both of these are both very obvious crimes to anyone who loves cars, or with any taste at all. In fact, they offend me so much I am thinking of petitioning Parliament to outlaw such offences :D

I'm positive that most people on this forum stuck on an exhaust for looks and sounds and surely only that because there literally is know other reason for an RX8 exhaust but that. It is a great mod but the definition of rice thats being put forward categorises the exhaust as rice.

The most important part of my decision to purchase an exhaust off Hymee was what I DIDN'T want to see. Negative looks, if you wish. I hated the look of the original muffler with a passion. I had followed a yellow RX-8 down a freeway for ten kays, and all I noticed was that huge ugly muffler.
I saw that Hymee's mufflers were hidden up in the heatshield and out of view. Then Timbo said it was the ducks guts and I was sold.
Even then though, I had Hymee paint the whole shebang in matte black.....!

The Hymee exhaust definitely is not "rice". It give an important performance benefit: substantial reduction in heat in the boot (trunk). Sure, it makes a bit more noise, but that's just to get the heat away, innit?
:D

To me "rice" is when the look of the car exceeds its performance.
If your car is fast enough, you can get away with just about anything. Take the picture below for example. Lowered to the max, huge exhaust pipes, massive wing, outrageous graphics. Rice? F*ck no!
