DMS adjustable shock
#1
Taka's quest for an adj. shock - DMS adjustable shock?
I am doing complete research on the coilover that is available in Australia and overseas as I am putting in my 8 at the end of the year.
Chatting to a few friends that do rally and track days a lot, they advise me against cheap brand like HKS :o
Drummond Motor Sports have one available for RX-8. One of the track day friend have alert me about this brand. They have done a lot of rally and put a lot in local production sport cars.
I am still looking at which of the 3 shocks/strut that Jeff from Tech///Sports talked about, but he said the spring rate is 300 pound front and 250 rear (about 5.3 kg front and 4.5 kg rear) and they are dual (double) progressive spring. This is nice since it will be softer on the road and firm when hard cornering.
They are set any height you want but generally around 30mm lower than stock.
I still like the magic figure of -20mm. :p
There will be 30 settings for rebound and bump, adjust together but unfortunately not individually (thank god for that - enough confusion :p).
Jeff said I can choose any spring rate I like... :p 16k and 10k (myback :p )
Any one have any deal with DMS before??
My friend in a Honda Integra Type R DC2 loved DMS.

yeah DMS are well known in rally circles for their 50mm diameter shocks (mainly for EVO and WRX rally cars) Apparently pretty damn good gear, and far better than most of the ricer style Japanese coil overs..
Proflex is reportedly better from a rally point of view, but it's a smaller operation, and waiting times can be long, but for a track day type car, I don't think there will be a lot to choose.
It's just getting backup and support that'll be the key I think.. If you wanna make wholesale changes to spring rates and shock valving...
Taka have you thought about approaching Quadrant in Victoria and getting some custom valved bilsteins on coil over struts, with your choice of spring rate? might work out cheaper, and possibly be better... I dunno just offering options!
Cheers

read an article from one of those asian magazines a couple of years ago about DMS coilovers.
like rowds mentioned, most of them were used for ralley and they offer great reliability but comes with an expensive price tag.
this HK guy said back in his ralleying days, other brand of coilovers would usually last him 2/3 rounds where a DMS setup would last him the whole competition (or something like that), so at the end, the DMS worked out to be better vaule for money.
at the end of they day, you need to see what yor requirements are and if that product have half decent after sale services etc.

Bilstein shock is going to break my bank
This is the email I got from Quandrant Suspension re Bilstein
and who said they are cheaper? The quality they have I actually expected the price they gave me

att Stephen
There are two kits designed for the RX8,
The first is height adjustable only and comes complete with shocks and springs all matched and tuned by Bilstein suitable for tracks days but still roadable.
The second is the top of the line and is height and 9 stage dampning
adjustable this kit we have supplied to people that have used them in road
rally events (eg.targa tas) and been very successful again this kit is tuned
by Bilstein and is roadable.
The cost of these kits are
$4800 fitted inc gst for the height adjustable
and
$5475 fitted for the height & damp adjust kit,
there is approx 6-8 weeks shipping delay.
regards Graham

IF I have the money I will spend 600 bucks more for the best stuff. In fact, it will be double as much :o as the DMS 40mm height and 30 adj dampering. I think I will go DMS, although I know that Bilstein is the best, since with $2400 more I can do the flywheel and clutch and even have spare change for all fluid change LOGIC there?
OR unless the rich bastard who has a 19" Enkei can lend me money interest free :D

I told you I had money until I spent it on those 19s. Now I to am broke too
Hang on though Taka I may be able to still help you out a bit. I'll ask around for you...
Hey you... Yes you, the one reading this post. Don't look behind you I'm talking to you. Yes that's it... You!
Can you help me out a bit. I know this really nice guy, a little eccentric but he really loves his car so we forgive him for that! Well you see he has his eyes set on some really lovely Bilstein suspension and I am told Santa has refused to give it to him for xmas no matter how good a boy he his. This just breaks his little heart and ours as we all would like to see our little Taka get his bilsteins. I mean he has not stopped talking about coilovers for I cannot remember how long now!
Well if you don't mind could you possibly spare him the money. He'll pay you back honest! he's good for it (well he should be he's in the bloody medical profession and you know what those guys earn ).
Thank you in advance for your help.
Cheers
There you go Taka... Done all I can, hope it helps :D

Hang on --- you're simply helping a certified 8 addict here! If we help him with this, he'll be back in a week (or less ) wanting money for another 'fix' -- probably a body kit or FI...his needs are endless.
Cold turkey for him, I say...after all, he has a wife and young child to support

I found it! My shock - Dreamwork factory
Now this is the best shock that I have seen racing in the Best Motoring / Hot Version video.
This things set very low and run 10 times faster in a corner than the Autoexe 8.
4 seconds + faster in Tsukuba circuit cf stock with stock engine (no intake no exhaust) and brake pad change only. 4 seconds Anyone play GT4 in PlayStation will know it takes a heck of a mod to reduce 4 seconds at Tsukuba (provided that you drive well to start with )
312900 Yen which is just under A$4000.

More shock for you (now R Magic's Ohlins)
Sorry for repeated reply but these are good.
I asked Ohlin's distributer in Australia. They said Ohlins does not have anything for RX-8 in Sweden. However, I saw something in Japan and they said R Magic made this under the license of Ohlins and use their components. Fair enough, since it is call R Magic Ohlins Orginial Coilovers.
Height can be adjust from -10 to -30mm front -35mm rear
Road aimed, plus occasional track day
Spring rate 8kg F 5kg R
294000 Yen ($3610.49) :p
