I hope this dosen't turn into another one of those 'police' threads.....

The story came out from a Courier Mail article two weeks ago which says, "Queensland Police could soon be employing the latest in cutting-edge technology in the fight against the state's spiralling road toll..."

..and a coffee perculator would complete the job nicely Michael...

Heres the car and the link.... http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/s...9-3102,00.html

Toys for the boys!

er....but didn't I just read that the road toll is spiralling....downwards!

IMHO, equipping police cars like this is the wrong approach. Surely, if 'we' (as in society) are really serious about controlling behaviour on and around the road, the simplesst approach would be to modify licence plates and rego label to incorporate a GPS transponder and RFID tag. These two simple pieces of technology would eliminate:
toll tags
parking meters
speed cameras
police pursuits (may as well link the GPS transponder to an engine immobiliser )
parking inspectors
highway patrol
...
...

Hahaha, you're such a ****-stirrer Timbo.

I did sniff at that crudely baited hook for a second but then decided I'm still on holidays...

And all you need to do is take OFF the transponder, steal someone elses plates and go for it!

being a criminal is so easy these days...

Onya Drew, for taking up the cudgels...the rest of you are BORING

Hmmm...but what if you linked the transponder, the RFID and the immobiliser, such that if one is interfered with, the vehicle cannot be driven?

Or, (c'mon Dave) created a mandatory 10 year loss of licence penalty for interfering with the technology....or public car crushing (which should be promoted as a spectator sport!), flogging, hanging....

You've read 1984 too many times Timbo.

Actually, we shouldn't laugh. There's sure to be some humourless frigging do-gooders in government who weren't cuddled as children who'd love to introduce exactly what Timbo has suggested.

I also seem to remember Clarkson writing a column back in the late 90's on this very issue when sat nav started becoming more popular. He saw the dark omens presaged by idiots who can't use a Gregory's and would prefer some pommy/yank chick's voice telling them where to turn right to get to the shops...mutter...mutter...grumble...grumble...

Well, we're about to have our internet content filtered, possibly at the ISP level. While it is easy to justify when mentioned in the same sentence as "pedophile", it's a slippery slope once you start ....not unlike licence plate recognition cameras and and 'starcatch' GPS transponder guns on police cars...it's all surveillance

...and Dave, nav systems are great ....just ask MACCAA about the trip back from the Nats with my Tom Tom, where we ended up in a cow paddock that was supposed to be the Hume Hwy

If I had my way, all police would wear a funny pillbox hat, only carry a small truncheon and whistle, ride a gearless Speedwell, and mostly be heard saying either "'ello, 'ello, 'ello...what's going on 'ere then?" ...or "Don't worry little boy/girl, we'll soon find your parents"

Timbo, we can only hope the pendulum will swing back by the time I retire.

The memories of a size 10 boot still lingers in my mind....!

While I could see them getting away with using it on fleet and government vehicles, I reckon it would be political suicide to make it mandatory for private cars...unless the voters in this country really have lost their cojones for good.
