Engine Build Need Help

Hey everyone,

I wanted to ask around see if anyone has attempted to do what im thinking of doing.

My 1st question is.

Q1. What is the problem with cutting a pice of thick gage metal and then carefully using a tig welder, and welding up the side exhaust ports. Then have them lapped and re nitrided and use GXL housings but running FD rotors and seals etc??. I cant see why I cant weld up these side ports on the plate and then machine them back to true. I know ill get all the **** come up with holes and pitting but i could just keep going over it till I get a clean surface. Has anyone tried this ??

Q2. The GXL PP can this be opened up the same as a FD housing ? anyone know if the FD templates can be used on the GXL rx7 housings ??

Q3. I have a 5 speed out of a old Nissan 300xz turbo could I use this gearbox?? are these any issues there once I find an adaptor plate or build one??

I understand this would not be very cost affective to everyone but I can do all the work myself and I already have 2 new GXL housings and like 3 old renny motors laying around. my plan was to run a boar runner turbo on the setup it in the hope to make around 430 to 450 at the wheels.
I think the engine would be more reliable running the FD rotors and having them side exhaust ports closed up then stud the motor.

What do you guys think ???

No idea mate. I think this is way above my pay grade. I been around here for a while and read heaps, never heard of this build mod.
Possibly float this idea in another thread that gets more traffic such as "technical" where you are likely to get some significant responses. Good luck in your quest.

Hey mate, yeah i would but i cant seem to post anywhere but here this website just dont allow me to ??

I would love to know about welding up this side plates most of all I just cant see what the problem would be

we build up crank shafts and regrind them back to get them back into spec and never have a problem with doing that so i dont see why i cant do the same with these plates

If you just recently joined here then you might need a few basic posts before the powers to be let you off your L plates!
No real idea about how or why/ not with the plates but there are some serious builders around here that will def know.
Be interested to see how it goes though.
I think the guys that choose to move away from Renesis go to the older REW turbo setup as that is an likely where fhe power is.
I went with a factory build hoping it lasts as long as original engine rather than the serious mods for a bit more power. Also just paid the man as i dont rate my skills. You sound like you have skills and worrkshop access. All the power to you!👍

I haven't tried this, but in the scenario where you weld the side port closed, I would worry about thermal expansion cracking all your welds. Not immediately but there's a reason engine blocks are cast and bolted, rather than welded out of component parts. Thermal expansion stress across welded joints (especially getting beaten by high EGT and compression pulses) is no fun. It will run but not sure how long. That's assuming you get your welds absolutely perfect.

Yeah true, however the peace will be welded all the way around as one peace and will be built up and filled with the tig as i go around it. so it should act as one peace u would think yeah ? I mean welds dont break on cranks when we build them up.
if the pice was the same thickness as its surrounding and was filled correctly all the way around it should not affect it as you are fusing the 2 paces as on.. U get what i mean ?

Yeah I agree with you on the REW its a much better engine. The only reason why im thinking of doing this as i have all these parts laying around and already have a housings so apart from the time there is not a lot of money to do it.

And I cant see where anyone as done this before. Like its not that hard to weld these holes up honestly.

Another Idea I though about was making metal inserts that bolt through the irons this would be much cheaper but im quite fond of welding as apposed to trusting a bolt that could come lose and destroy the entire engine.
