Well, the short answer is that the car has now been fixed by Artarmon for stealership prices.
They diagnosed replacement coils, trailing plugs and new leads. You don't want to know the eye-watering parts cost.
Essentially, they refused to store the car for a few days while I waited for the US coils to arrive, which meant I had to either approve the work or get it towed elsewhere and find someone else to do the work, yada yada yada. I just don't have time to muck around with that stuff atm, so after much protesting I agreed to let them do the work.
To be fair, they were sympathetic about both pricing and the nature of the fault and have agreed to take up the cause with Mazda direct to see if they can negotiate a partial refund for me. I'll keep you posted.
I suggest everyone who has this problem immediately lets Mazda Australia know that the word is out on this 'fault' and they had better sort it out the same way they did with batteries, starter motors and plugs previously (i.e. a de facto 'recall' in that if you whinge about it, they will cover the cost of replacement).
I hope they are re-visiting the whole ignition system on this engine, which seems to be the source of many problems in the earlier cars. My car has only done 40K and it has now had the battery, starter motor, plugs (two twice), coils, and leads replaced. You cannot tell me that isn't a design issue.
The postscript is that I've got a set of coils on their way that will need to find a home. I don't want to make any profit and am happy to sell them for what I paid provided the purchaser also covers mailing costs to them (or picks them up). Let me know if anyone's interested.

THAT was the symptom of the original recall on the RX-8, which was fixed by a new oil pan and reflash. I'd check the service history of your car, and ask your dealer to check all recalls have been completed on this car

Do so Andrew. Worth having on the shelf at home in the event yours go unexpectedly.
BTW, although the service guy at Artarmon initially trotted out the party line about the risks of 'non-genuine' overseas parts and how some US parts aren't compliant with Australian models, etc, etc, etc (and I thought I could talk), he eventually confirmed that he had checked out the coils (he even quoted the pricing accurately) and advised that what we order from the US is fully compliant with our cars.

I did initially dig my heels in and was going to get the car towed, etc but life's just too hectic atm and I caved in.
At least I can afford it. I feel bad for younger owners who are going to get stung with this rip off pricing for a fault which Mazda should be paying for.

My shiny new coils arrived from the US today via priority mail and are sitting on my desk as I type this. I ordered them less than a week ago.
I think I'll keep them as spares (sorry Taka) but if anyone needs them urgently to get out of the hassle I had last week, let me know and I'll pass them on in return for the recipient ordering me a replacement set.

Sorry to hear that your car got sick...sorrier to hear that you were made sick by Mazda......my car has clocked over 45,000kms now......bought in Jan 06 it's a Oct 05 model I think....have to look at the CP......
Interestingly today it was idling a bit lumpier than normal.....or was it my imagination....
might take it to the local dealer for them to look at it.....
Anyone managed to get flash updates done without a service? Anyone know how many flash updates there have been in the last 12 months....?? I have a very good race car mechanic that cares for my 8......I even got it back last time with the engine bay detailed....looked like a brand new car...now that's love for ya!

Car is going fine now and we're making mincemeat of our opposition in that trial, which will run for another two weeks this year and probably 4 next year. I think they're wishing they had taken the money on offer in 2005!

I know that couldnt be cheap Revolver, my quote for 1 coil plus leads is $530 so im guessing you didnt get any change from close to $1000.
I was a little suprised that mazfix quoted me $100 for a used coil also.
I think im going down the path of DMRH and others and doing myself also, if ive got time or buy the parts and get mazfix to do it for $100.

Perhaps the Stealership could give you a refund for the US parts and you can make a profit on them? (coils that is)

I'm surprised there isn't an importer in Australia doing just this (I presume there isn't??).
At these prices (just ordered coils from the US) I would have thought someone might bring some of this stuff in , mark it up, and still undercut MA by about 50%.
The lease on my 8 is about to run out and I'm paying it out and keeping the car (4yr/100,000km) but I must admit I'm feeling a bit uneasy about reliability (starter, coils, plugs, clutch, battery etc)
Having had enough of the dealers, is there anyone in Brisbane for servicing who knows what's what with RX8s?
