Before our dollar dropped 33 cents..

I guess Aussies are 'subsidising' the US market.
Why is Tooheys beer $20 a carton less than Boags?
Production costs would be less that $1 a carton different.

The G8 (about $38k on the exchange rate) costs more than what an Omega costs here at $30k drive away.
I'll bet it costs little more than $1000 extra to produce.

That is one of the funniest generalisations I have seen in a while.

Mate, compare the same variety.
The Omega has a locally produced engine and a transmission (if auto, that is nearly 30 years old).
The VE SS and G8 have an engine that is imported from the US and sent back to them in a complete car. Both these models would have the same production cost (G8 actually cost more as it has more in it) is then shipped to the US (more cost) and sells for 20K less.
Now our dollar is lower it is even cheaper to send to the states.

You can never defend it, of course, but I would just point out that the entire Australian market is smaller than that of greater Los Angeles

Well I think the greater area of LA has a population of about 18 million.

Australia has a population of about 21 million.

But of course I know your point is still relevant.

Having said that - our rx8 shouldn't be too different from Japan's rx8 (population 127,000,000) - so why the price difference with japan?

Why is it that you can buy a bottle of Coke cheaper than a bottle of water?
Purely marketing.

Holden don't have to sell the SS for $50000 to break even.
Now that things are a little tight you can get into HSV for $54000 drive away - $18000 less then retail. Considering the exchange rate there is a gulf of difference in price between an Omega and the G8.

Does a RX-8 really cost double a 3 series to produce?

If Mazda sold RX-8s for $10k less they would sell a lot more of them but it would stuff up their overall brand.

Loss leaders and profit takers.

Size of market and what people are prepared to pay for a given product (i.e. covering fixed costs and supply and demand). If they can get away with a higher price in a given market, they will. Porsche is a classic case in point.

It's called capitalism. Those arguing for the same low price no matter where you live, etc should have a good think about how the commies fared in the 20th century.

So stop whinging and either pay up or buy something else. No amount of griping on a chat forum is going to affect Mazda's pricing strategies one iota. However, if enough people desert the product, prices will come down...

Because I have been so busy..I finally filled my Bat-mobile up..

Took exactly 60 litres for 540 Kilometers, 9 kilometers per litre.
Or around 20 MPG.
I think it will improve with more mileage on the clock and the correct fuel.

I knew the Dealership filled the tank with normal unleaded (91) not premium.
The sales guy said Oh no we only put in Premium, Bulldust, I knew the pinging under slight load was the fuel.

As soon as I put in BP Ultimate (98), she took off like a rocket and NO pinging whatsoever, as smooth as a baby's bum!..

I will make sure I note this in any Customer satisfaction survey what fuel the dealer used.

I am not imagining this but the car definitely has that little more ZIP!or POKE!

God she is a beautiful thing...WHAT A CAR, WHAT ENJOYMENT.

I just love all the comments on "other" forums which say the RX-8 is a gutless heap (and they have driven one..too), far from it, I don't go over 4000 RPM yet and she is plenty fast enough for me....while running in.

The gearing and gearbox ratio's are perfect, just right for traffic and when you stretch her legs out on the freeway 6th gear is Just right.

GOD SHE IS A FANTASTIC CAR, DID I ALREADY SAY THAT!!!..

I GET WITHDRAWALS IF I GO MORE THAN A DAY WITHOUT DRIVING HER...

Ash, 60 litres? Is the tank bigger on the SII? With the needle under E on my car I struggle to get 55 litres into the tank.

Cheers

Sorry Andrew I did not get back sooner..

Yes, the Series II has a 65 litre tank, so when my fuel light came on I traveled for about 15 K's and refilled to the top, it took exactly 60 litres.

BTW, I just received my genuine US 2009 RX-8 Workshop manual ($140 US) ...in
A4 paper... all up it is around 7 inches THICK!!..
Slightly cheaper than the $1135.oo Mazda Australia wanted for their CD Disc.

So I have put in 4 x 3 ringed Folders..
The Categories are..

GENERAL INFORMATION
ENGINE
SUSPENSION
DRIVELINE/AXLE
BRAKES
TRANSMISSION/TRANSAXLE
STEERING
HEATER,VENTILATION & AIR CONDITIONING (HVAC)
RESTRAINTS
BODY & ACCESSORIES
ALPHABETICAL INDEX

The wiring diagram is obviously is in another BIG manual.
However this manual tells you how to repair and test any issues you have with any electrical components, including error codes.

Well did another Fuel FILL today, exactly 60 litres again..

Remember first delivery tank I got 540 KM, Dealer did not use high octane fuel., pinging galore!, no gear changes above 4000 RPM.

My First fill I used BP's top 98 petrol, I got 520 KM, but was driving more spirited, taking her up to 5000, sometimes 6000 RPM, average still around 4000 RPM.

Today my second fill I used Shell V2, so I will see what goes there later.

Personally I can not tell any difference between BP and Shell.

Forgot to add,

Now my Bat-Mobile has done over 1000 Km she is starting to loosen up a little more, the gearbox is a lot smoother, engine has always been willing.

But GOD this is Beautiful and a sheer pleasure to drive, it's tight, no rattles, goes around corners like she is on rails, it is just so easy to drive..

As far as power goes, I really don't know what people complain about, this car has more than enough.
Perhaps it does move with so little fuss that drivers expect more?, when I look down at the speedo I am always shocked just how fast I am going...this car is just amazing, it gets better every day I drive it.

This car would have to be one of the all time best secrets in the auto world, I just don't understand why they are not walking out the door.

There is NOTHING like it for the price,......... anywhere..

I am getting 20MPG and it will improve,so, What is wrong with that...It is a Bloody Sports Car, not a family econo box..

I really do not understand what people whine about...

This car is nothing short of SUPERB!

After doing some miles on my Series II RX-8 in the city, this new Diff Ratio is RUBBISH!..

I love my car, but I am constantly changing gear!!..
In fact I am going to complain and TRY and get the Series I (Lower Ratio Diff),

I am going to see if they will replace in under warranty...GOOD Luck you say...

Really, I am not impressed at all...

In 4th gear at 3000 RPM I am doing 60 KMH! which is our suburban speed limit (50 in most areas), so to lower revs I have to change to 5TH!, then to prevent her from laboring if I bring up the revs I am speeding!
We have speed cameras everywhere!

Sorry, but it is Bullshit!

I'll swap ya is it's 4.7

3000rpm @ 60 doesn't seem that bad I reckon 3k is where most cars cruise.

Thanks,
Yep she is a beauty, they look SO much better in the flesh, I really like the front now, funny how you get used to it, IMO it has more class that Series I, the clear headlamps with all chrome reflectors the oil cooler opening with the splash of chrome at the fog lights, all adds to the class with the wheels..

It is incredible the amount of people who just stare at it, one guy said is that the new PORSCHE!, I said RX-8, he said, it is bloody beautiful...
I have to add the colour definitely makes the new look style and white is definitely the best or black,...although I am bias, and you guys are sick of me gloating...I don't blame you...the only thing I don't like is the diff ratio, it is bloody awful in the city..

Hi Ash, seriously if you do want the series 1 diff ratio, I'd be more than happy to send you my spare 32,000km one and cover the freight costs for both.

Cheers,
Danny

I am sure you would.....

You have a spare? from the MX-5?, but no, I had a frustrating CITY day yesterday really.
I do though want to compare both cars A@B, perhaps I might get the opportunity at the coming track day? and I would not put a used 32K diff in a brand new car.

Thanks for you generous offer.

Have you driven a series II RX-8?

I called dibs first

given time I reckon you will get use to the diff ratio. revs aren't a bad thing.

Hmm, you bought a sports car but don't like changing gears??

Would the torque of a V8 be more up your alley?

Personally, I don't drive anywhere under 3K rpm because the car is a slug under that. I rarely change up under 4K. So let her rev in the lower gears and enjoy the responsiveness...
