hong kong people are crazy about Korea atm. They show korean tv show - the one about old Korean kingdom and the female servant??? cooking and please the king. You know of that one??? it is so famous in hong kong & taiwan that korea builded a theme park with all the stage setytings for the chinese to visit!
back yop this thread. I think the insulator under the boot should be thicker to get of more noise while crising. I have it in the 6th and when crusing there is a very slight noise. like the noise when you lean the tab stick to the limiting plate on the right.
but when i lift the boot up slightly. the noise goes away.

You may or may not have noticed when you removed the console that under the boot there is some sound deadening material, similar to the thick rugs that removalist use. Anyway, I removed that altogether and voila!!! the sound of silence was like music to my ears.. I even drove around teh block a few times in 2nd just to make sure and ran her through the entire rev range.. well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it :D
So anyone else who may be experiencing any sort of noise in 2nd, give this trick ago. I'm not making any promises as i can't figure out why this is the solution, all I know is that it worked for me.
EDIT: I still have a ball bearing out of a bicycle hun sitting on top of the SS, so that I can't screw the **** down too far.

Walked back in the door two minutes ago. Removing the wadding reduces the noise by about 60%, I'd say!
A very significant reduction .

and let me try and get this right, because we played with our "shafts" we have to let out "head" blow its "wad" to get some relief from the noise that you get at second base....sorry..I mean gear...... I think i rented this moive once!

The wadding thing only makes sense if it is too stiff and is transmitting noise from the shifter to the body or some chamber... If you remove the wadding is there more heat coming from the gear lever boot?
I am interested in this as funding is likely to be approved for a new shifter ahead of the legendary Hymee exhaust... The Finance Director hates strange noises... Screwing ***** is not her thing... :p

The lever is attached to two rubber shift boots which lie under the faux leather one you see on the console cover panel. These rubber boots isolate heat from the transmission area and prevent direct entry into the cabin.

I don't believe that wadding designed to be acoustic deadeding could transmit noise. If it's too solid it may be pressing down on a surface causing the transmission vis a vis the weight suggestion or possibly changing the apprarent length of the shaft.
We may have harmonic's going on, ie moving the head up and down the shaft slightly changes it's nominal length. My brother in law is an audio engineer, going to see if he has any idea.
I can't see that it's a weight effect, moving the head a couple of mm is not going to have significant change in torsion. There are so many variable, ie the position of the plastic sleeve on the bottom of the shaft, mine cam off while i was reinstalling the 2nd boot. So now in a slightly different position from stock. This would change the mechanical force imparted by the rubber boot. (which in itself has to be bugger all)
I've tried the **** loosening and I really don't think there is a difference, but maybe mine wasn't as tight to start. Anyway keeps us all tinkering.

try removing the **** altogether and see if that makes any difference.
The noise I experienced when I first installed the RAP SS wa quite loud, so loosening the **** reduced it by at least 50%, then with the latest fix (wad removal), the noise level was reduced even further. I may have been a little over zealous with my other post saying that it removed 99% of the noise, but it is definitely a signifcant amount amount. I can hardly hear it now.

I believe it works by allowing the shifter to rest free of pressure supplied when the **** is screwed up tight against the shift boot. This pressure holds the shifter against the selector in the top of the box and transmits gear noise into the cabin. You'll notice that resting your hand on the shifter when driving increases the gear noise in a similar way.

I understand what you said in the past post, I just don't believe a kinked piece of 1mm vinyl can exert measurable pressure. And it won't be a constant in one direction and clearly the noise is increased by pressure (hand strength) by differing amounts depending on the direction. So I'm sceptical.
My shiftboot sits freely below the **** and i bet it would loose contact with the **** with a 50c piece placed on it. (even Kiwi $)
And i will try **** removal as a test. Cause I do believe in experimentation
Anyway it's the puzzle that bothers me not the minimal noise, and as I like to drive with a window open, I can't bloody hear it over Hymee's cans and Groove Armada on 10 anyway!
Still this keeps us busy and not thinking about "vapourware vapourisers from some disreputable queenslander".:D

I don't think it's the boot either.
I have a new gear **** and it has no contact (i.e. no screw on) to the boot but I still get the noise. It's actually more metallic (the sound) than before..
