forced induction kits in australia
I'm keen to give my car some more power so I have been looking to some form of forced induction.
most kits are very expensive or need some work and extras to work well. tuning is my greatest fear since most kits come with the manufactures 'special' interceptor to control it. That means you trust the kit to be plug and play or potentially trust someone with no experience with the interceptor to do a safe tune.
I thought I'd compile a list of forced induction kits which we can get in Australia. (costs are approximate and most include drive in drive out installs except the greddy) feel free to post any info you know about.
Greddy kit:
cost: $6000
engine management: e-manage
comments: lots of information on this kit on this forum, needs a number of cheep fixes, and possibly another engine management system if you can't get the emanage to work.
mazfix turbo:
cost: $10,500
engine management: unknown plug-in?
comments: 200rwkW, with what seems to be a small turbo, similar but slightly higher performance than the greddy system.
promazturbo:
cost: $12,000
engine management: microtech ecu.
comments: claimed 300kW or 100kW increase. 200rwkW reported by third party. lots of shops can tune microtech's.
DNA/rotor master (procharger)
cost: $12,000 (stage 2?)
engine management: powermod
comments: 200rwkW of peaky centrifugal supercharger.

...why have all the FI owners developers here gone so quiet?
Not meaning to strat a flame war, but people seem to get a rush of blood, come on all strong, and then suddenly it all goes quiet.

we have lots of options but nothings inexpensive. the .au made kits make the greddy kit look like a bargain.

How would one obtain an engineers certificate when you get one of these bad boys put onto your car? do places like rotor master inspect it and then give it to you?

Yes I can vouch to being very worded up on the ProMaz kit as I visit often. Simon (ProMaz) when he fitted the latest kit to a car had an engineer visit and certify that the work was of good quality and wouldnt be a road hazzard. He then had a licensed EPA tester come and certify that the kit (with hiflo cat and exhaust installed) was noise and polution legal.
The 300Kw statement was a reverse calculation to the the Flywheel power and is just a marketing thing. The important thing is that pre turbo the car dyno'd ~100rwkw and post it was over 200rwkw.
As for Superchargers, I have been DYING to to get my car supercharged since Hymee started talking about it, but unfortunately he seems to have dropped off with the kit. In Victoria, the law states that you aren't allowed to use devices like the Apexi exhaust restrictor to pass noise regulations and as such I am pretty sure that a supercharger would be no go .
As a side note, I was at centreline suspension today and had the pleasure of being shown all their rotary wares. Lots of 20Bs, a 13G, some Variable Intake runner kits for said engines and some very tempting (albeit expensive) offers to do the work on the same technology for the RX-8.

The compressor/turbine combination of the turbo is one. So you will see different peaks an troughs on the Dyno, as a result I THINK the Promaz kit has a its power kick in a little sooner and it has a little more torque down lower. I am trying to get my hands on the ProMaz Dyno to compare to the MazFix...
I didnt get a look at the MazFix kit at last years Nats (not going into that again) but ProMaz kit is impossible to see unless its on a hoist and you are looking for it.

Why dont you drop into Mazfix and take Archies turboed rx8 for a run. He is more than happy to let you drive it and make up your own mind! I am pretty sure he has done over a dozen turbo converstions now. As for the boost tapering off that is not a problem if you want the boost to increase or stay the same that is easily achevied via the inbuilt boost management control which i am pretty sure is not available on the Greddy kit.

by my budgeting calculations the cheep greddy kit with fixes, tuning and miscellaneous would be over $8000 so it doesn't save much for a lesser result.
still I'm waiting for the knightsports SC kit for various reasons if it doesn't deliver for some reason the mazfix kit would be next in line.

I have to say that the KS kit doesnt interest me as the Centrifugal blower is so like a turbo you may as well get one for all the issues you are going to have with noise. I know of one person who is booked in to have the rotormaster removed (they may have removed it already) and replaced with a turbo kit because its to loud.

is the issue exhaust noise or blower whine? the rotrex units are supposed to have less blower whine as they don't have meshing teeth to step them up. even vortech are using helical gears to reduce noise. procharger use straight cut gears.

No the issue is with exhaust noise. Turbo Chargers use the exhaust to power the turbine so you get a natural muffling. Supercharger doesnt and the only way to overcome the increased noise is to add more muffling. That muffling is going to rob you of significant power.
I am starting to sound like a bloody ProMaz sales rep but again and we have state issues to contend with but Promaz have spent multiple $1,000 to get the kit certified and road legal. This way you dont have to worry abou the Police and it doesnt affect insurance.
I am not sure about QLD/NSW regulations and requirements but in Vic, the Mazfix, RotorMaster and KS kits would all have to be certified and I doubt the 2 SC kits would pass without serious exhaust/muffler mods.
If you can, let me know what the requirements are in QLD, I am always interested.
EDIT: Just checked MazFix site and it is legal, in QLD. I would say this is your best bet mate.
