Handheld UHF Radios for Cruises
Guys,
I have mentioned before the usefulness of Handheld UHF units for cruises.
I have an email address of a LS1 forum member mate who supplied Sco and myself each with a Uniden 2W handheld at a considerably cheaper price. He is a Uniden dealer. We saved around 25%
I asked him if he would do the similar deal for RX-8 forum guys, and he said yes, and gave me permission to give out his email address so you can contact him direct:
andy@unicomm.com.au
also see www.unicomm.com.au
Mention RX-8 forum, but no need to mention my name - I am not on a kickback or anything, just letting you know where to get good product at the right price.
Cheers,
Hymee.

uniden 044 2w selling at Tandy for $168.00, i feel 3 km range is more than enough .
Taka the one you are talking about only has a .5 w very low talking range .
Hymees contact is getting back to me to see what he can do on a 2wunit for a better price
cheers

that is true but how hard is it to convince my friends to buy a $200 thing for cruises only happen 4 times a year?
It is only useful in mountains when we have a brave person to check on coming traffic so that we can pass slow decenders on the roads..
We turned off the CB on main road coz one of our friends usually drains our 4xAA batteries out with his continous chattering

Guys,
0.5W is good enough for close quarters cruising. To be honest, I have a 2W unit, and have only ever had to use it on 0.5w setting. But I have been on LS1 cruises where the first car and the last car could only talk via 2W TX. Of course, anyone on 0.5W could here them, as it a TX power, not RX.
Perhaps that means we should RX on ch 8 (RX-8) :p
I am just sus about those cheap ($50 or 2/$100) ones as per Wildcard's mate's report.
Cheers,
Hymee.

I have more to add on the 0.5W Uniden units:
I bought a Uniden UH040 .5W radio at Christmas time and I am still on the original batteries after probably 20 hours of use. (Cost $89 from Dick Smith on sale at the time). A mate of mine decided to go with the "2/$100" Uniden units and he has gone through about 10 sets of batteries in the same time - no kidding!
From my expereince, the 0.5W radios work fine in a convoy of 2 or 3 because you never really lose sight of each other or get seperated by more than about 1km. Further than that, I think my friends "2/$100" radio becomes the limiting factor.
While the smaller and cheaper "2/$100" radios may appear the same on paper, experience shows that you do indeed "get what you pay for."

Thanks to Wildcard for backing my recollection of a discussion that took place at the drags one night.
And I'll add that the UH040 0.5W unit of Wildcards is the "same" as my UH044 2W unit in terms of packaging / physical size etc. The only difference being the UH044 has the ability to TX at 4x the power level if desired.
Cheers,
Hymee.
