Hi-tech driving sunnies

My eye specialist suggested it could be about time that I consider prescription glasses for driving. This troubled me, as I have a very nice pair of semi-wrap Bolle sunnies that my wife had given me, and the thought of regular spectacles with flip-down clip-ons made me shudder. I saw this ad in the paper for Drivewear lenses. These are combination polarizing/"transition" lenses. You get glare reduction from the polarizing layer, and the photochromic layer darkens on exposure to (mostly) UV light. The good part about it was that OPSM were able to fit the prescription Drivewear lenses to my Bolle frames.

I am very pleased with the result. The lenses darken nicely from light through the windscreen, and the glare reduction seems as good as the Bolle polarizing lenses. Last night, I wore them as it became twilight, and I have to say I could safely keep them on until it was nearly dark. The degree of tint in low light is quite light, probably lighter than some of the "legal" windscreen tints around. The light tint is meant to enhance contrast in low light and overcast situations.

For those who aren't visually challenged, I read that Drivewear lenses are available in plano. They aren't cheap, but since I had a fair bit of credit built up in my Medibank Private account, the net cost turned out to be quite reasonable.

Glad that you made this move.

I cannot since if I look down the microscope, it may darken LOL.

I've got the transition lens, and it won't darken inside the car because the sun does not directly shine on the lens (only through the car window). I don't understand why drivewear lens can go dark with the sunlight through the car window? And I'm talking about the front windscreen that is not tinted.

As far asI understand the chemistry of the photochromic compounds used in the transition lenses, most react (darken) when exposed to the UV light present in sunlight. Modern sandwich-construction windscreens have a plastic layer which as well as providing shatter-proof qualities also absorbs most of the UV part of the spectrum. I can verify the claim that the Drivewear lens does indeed darken inside the car. This morning, driving into the sun on the way to work I noticed that the top part of the lens which is shaded by the peak of my (Labrat) cap was noticeably lighter than the bottom part. Drivewear claims that their supplier of transition technology has achieved improvements in this area. Drivewear claim that they also react to longer wavelengths in the visual part of the spectrum which aren't absorbed. You can read more herehttp://www.drivewearlens.com/engine.php
