The noise you're describing is the throttle body actuator holding the throttle plate slightly open prior to start. It really sings if you set the key to IGN for a long period without starting.

I don't think it is the air pump after re-reading the first post. He said it happens when the car is warm, the pump only runs for a little while after a cold start. I can't make anything out of the sound files.

If the car runs okay, don't worry about it. This car has so many actuators, valves, solenoids etc, it could be any one of them carrying out it's normal function.

Gomez.

The "ZZZZZZINNNNGGGGGGGG" constantly going on is surely the air intake. I'm very familiar with it. But the bumpy noise thats much bassier, if that is the problem, i have no clue.( could be just the wav files bad?)

Thanks - I wondered what it was but never stuck my head under the bonnet to find out. It sure does sing... mine's hummed many a long one note tune while I've been writing and testing sCANalyser.

The sound is constant whether idling, accelerating or decelarating. Air leak of some sort methinks.

Mazda's sending an "RX-8 specialist" to take a look at it this Friday. Will post results (if any) here.

She's idling a little rough and every once in a while, misses a beat. Dealer said that its normal - HAH! I'll see what the RX-8 specialist has to say on Friday. After that, I'll have it serviced at Rockdale as recommended by some of the guys here. Its a long way fr Hornsby but if that's what it takes..........

Yep... that rough idle is normal. You get used to it. If you're talking to the "RX-8 specialist" it would be great if you can get the low down on what changes are in the latest WDS update for the RX-8, or as it we call it here "the latest flash". Bonus points if you can convince him/her to get on the forum and get involved.

Peter (the RX-8 specialist fr Mazda NSW) could not find the source of the sound but did say that it is abnormal. It is a vacuum leak of some sort - not serious but present. The car is now booked in on the 23/05 for Peter to try locate and rectify the problem. Hope he finds it. He was very helpful and seems to be knowledgeable. I suppose I can call my 8 the "whistling 8" :D

Hi,

One way to trace mysterious noises is to use the "stethoscope" method (see if you can borrow Taka's ).

Just about any sort of tubing will do, but I use a piece that's about a third the diameter of a hosepipe.

Just apply one end to your ear and move the other end around likely spots. Obviously, "likely spots" will vary depending on what sort of noise you are trying to locate. It's also important to keep your hands - and the end of the tube - away from moving parts such as belts!

Another method I've seen mechanics use (and sometime used myself) for tracking the more rumbly metallic sort of internal noises, is the "screwdriver" method. This involves putting the handle against one ear, and the blade against the block, head, gearbox, or whatever you're trying to get a sound signal from. (Caution: don't let your mates rev the engine, unless you like the feel of a screwdriver handle stuck in your ear.. ).

Good luck.

I don't think Taka is licenced to work on live people And a stethoscope is not much use on his usual customers???

Surely, ALL doctors have a stethoscope! Isn't it compulsory for the image? I thought that if you can't use it at work you simply wear it like jewelry, to impress the ladies.... :p

And how impressed would they be if you were a doctor AND could diagnose weird noises in their car! :D

I have the same exact sound, and it occured only after installing an AEM CAI. It is only pronounced as the car warms up, but I have not noticed any performance issues at all, and have doublechecked all the vaccum line hosing to ensure there were no leaks. Air intake is definitely causing the sound (or perhaps the stock assembly was muffling it before), but again, nothing affected with performance...

The engine is mounted almost midway to help balance. And rotary make specific sounds that no other vehicle make. I buy them just for the sounds and feel not the power. Have the tech check it out. And yea pops and stuff is normal, this is what people PAY for.

Reviving this thread! Simply because I just got my AEM cold air intake installed and I hear this whining noise... Does it go away?
