Turning off your lights and appliances will reduce carbon dioxide about as much as holding your breath for an hour would. I wouldn't suggest holding yours.

To do my bit, I intend to refrain from eating baked beans, lentils and other pulses for a whole 24 hours. I will thereby reduce my methane production during this time, thus aiding the fight against global warning. I will also engage any ruminant I can find in serious conversation in an attempt to get them to modify their own dietary habits. However, I suspect I will have as much success as trying to persuade the average brain-dead greenie about the merits of nuclear power generation.
Um, there's something else - seeing as how we all drive RX-8's, which doesn't exactly compete with the Prius in the CO2 production stakes - isn't it just that little bit incongruous talking here about saving the earth?

Earth hour is a crock
So sorry to be a party pooper here in Adelaide but why is this only 1 hour? Why not all the time. Do we honestly think that turning off lights and appliances for 1 hour will help? What about when the hour is over??
No really all this global warming, carbon credits, polar icecaps melting and the like...did you ever stop to think that it might be some very clever people who can market snow to eskimos and sand to arabs???
We should really be following these guidelines all the time.
This is why we run our 7.8l V8 Ford Bronco on gas...why I plant trees and why I tell clueless drivers to buy a Prius.
Are you going to stop driving your car for an hour/week? Cause we do more harm driving than microwaving your pop corn and watching a movie on the box!
WOnder how many house fires there will be cause of unattended candles, how many fridges will work twice as hard when they get turned back on? Are they turning off the traffic lights? Electricity plants? No don't be silly....who is sponsoring earth hour??? A POWER COMPANY!!!!!

i totally get what ur saying rotor convert. one hour once a year wont make any significant difference to the climate change situation. but i think the point of international earth hour is more about raising awareness & encouraging people to make the lifestyle changes that may actually help
anyway i hope everyone knows im not trying to force people to make changes they dont want to - myself, i know theres no way im selling my rx8 for a hybrid ! haha

I hear you there...but the latest sales of cars have SUV's and 4WD outranking nice economical buzz boxes.....houses are getting bigger....we are running out of water...our government can't manage our resources......oh the shame... Collectively I agree we can make a change...but we are the lil people.....industry must make a collosal change before any real benefits will be felt......
The climate change issue....well if there is one.....seems destined to keep the media and power brokers with something that can create mass hysteria. Once upon a time it was not groovy to have a water tank, local shops couldn't sell solar panels to save their lives and people didn't want trees in their gardens, they just wanted box hedges and standard iceberg roses.....now it's eco friendly gardens and water tanks under houses.......but still this doesn't fix the issues when places like India can have a car for a couple of grand........oh I could go on for days on this...

Much of what you're saying is correct Julia but Earth Hour, as Trish says, is more about getting people to actually do stuff like turning things off and thinking about it. If they do it once with all their appliances, lights, etc, they might do it more often with some of them - it all helps.
China is opening a new coal fired power station once a week, so nobody is pretending that Earth Hour is going to do squat about global warming but it's a bit like stopping a cargo ship and turning it around - it takes time and distance but you need to start somewhere. Once the world's collective mentality takes hold of the issue, we might eventually see an improvement before it's all too late.

An interesting point was raised on morning radio here. The point being that the day is to raise awareness. As was stated, the current emphasis has been put on the individuals instead of the corporate world. However, things like IEH are raising awareness which is helping extend to the corporate world. Example being the Rialto building here in Melb. The building management engaged all their tenants to join in allow them to turn the building lights off. In doing this Building management were flooded by their multinational tenants asking for help in implementing more long term stratagies.
DrGonzo, who the hell is that journalist??? Does he actually believe that "Global Warming" is about everything getting warmer? So because ocean temperatures have cooled, we dont have global warming??? PUHLEASE!
Also, are you coming to Station Pier on Sat?
Cheers
Andrew

LOL I enjoy reading Andrew Bolt's articles. I find them quite interesting. I don't agree with everything he says and he is terribly one sided, but some comments do have merit.
His Earth Hour comments are pretty spot on - we aren't going to benefit from it at all and the mere fact that they used a hot air baloon to promote the event makes it a farce. It's a political thing - be seen to be doing the right thing rather than actually doing the right thing.
Just my opinions, sorry if I offend.
Andrew - is it this weekend? I don't think I will be able to make it. Might come along to the Promaz dyno day for a look though. Keen to get out on some drives but work/personal lives have been pretty hectic lately.
