Just got the car
Hi,
Just picked up the Winning Blue RX-8 from Essendon Mazda. Just did a short drive through the suburbs to get used to it. It is quite a car. The blue in real life is quite stunning.
If anyone is after a RX-8 around Essendon, go see Laurie Wilks at Essendon Mazda. He was very helpful and attentive. He made the buying experience very enjoyable.
Anyone want to buy a used 1999 MX-5?

Many happy KM's to you.

i got my red rx-8 last night. 6:30pm on a wet wednesday night in essendon. (great sales guy: laurie wilkes from essendon mazda- threw in rx-8 floor mats - nice and colour coded to car!) all the detailling on the outside went to waste. car is nice and muddy now.
still looks great. the red has nice gold bits in it!!! haven't seen in day light today. drove my wife's rav4 to work. i have traded my 10.5 year old mx-5 which has served me well. i hope the rx-8 will be as reliable as the mx-5.
interior is so comfortable compared to old mx-5. lots of storage space. very well laid out. bose sound system was okay. have to test it out still. the 9 speakers didn't seem to add much to the overall sound compared with the stock 1992 2 speaker sound system on the old mx-5. maybe my ears are getting old from industrial deafness (listening to high speed handpieces all day).
i kept stalling the engine initially. kept hitting 6th gear instead of reverse.
the engine is so responsive. had to keep remembering to shift down early during my self imposed gentle run in period.
the oil check instructions were very specific.
how often will people check their oil levels?
i'll do it weekly. have to buy mazda rotary oil. combination of mineral and synthetic.
i'm short so the back passengers have HEAPS of space.
maybe my legs are too short but i'm quite close to the steering for me to comfortably depress the clutch.
have to buy a baby seat for my 3 year old son. nice anchor points. can't wait for the cracker and biscuit crumbs to start building up in the car!!! :-(
it will also fill with toy dinosaurs in the back.
can't wait until the first 1000km then i can stretch it a bit. the limits of the car feel very high compared to my abilities.
going to buy rotary badge from front and back bumpers. the running boards seem adequate unlike the old mx-5 which forced you to buy a pair or it was scratch-city on the door sills.
more later once i wind it up a bit.
going for a nice drive through black spur this weekend with family. dry weather!!!
regards
mike

Ricer is Nicer.....
First impressions....
Thanks for the quick review!
Regards the 'short legs' syndrome, are you sure the seat height is adjusted properly? Having the seat too high will get you too close to the wheel.........
Tell me more about this special mazda rotary oil - is it in your manual, or is the dealer just trying to get you back for service; "this is the only place you can get our special oil"?!?!?

donaldc and mktchin,
Congrats on getting your cars. I drove the winning blue auto at the Eastern Creek drive day and it sure is a lovely clour. Like Lock & Load, Winning Blue was my second choice but I am a sucker for red cars, not just sports cars either.
Are you enjoying the head turning of other drivers and pedestrians as they crane their necks to get a look at your fantastic car ?

you don't have to buy mazda oil. the manual recommends a grade specification and a viscosity rating based on temperature.
API SG, SH, SJ, or SL
or
ILSAC GF-II or GF-III
with a range of viscosities:
40
30
20W-20
20
10W-30
10W-40
10W-50
20W-40
14W-40
20W-50
15W-50
5W-20
5W-30
based on aussie seasonal temps, the best viscosity is: 20W-50 or 15W-50.
going to drive to work with my red one tomorrow.
