Mazda 3 SP23 vs the new Mazda 6 Classic Hatch
#51
For 06 the mazda 3 will be doing away with the sp23. There is a GT package ( i think it's called gt not 100% sure) that includes everything the sp23 did plus a few more neat things. Also the 06's will have the 5spd auto that the mazda6 has, so that's another plus (or maybe minus according to you :D ). I would go hands down with the mazda3 5dr, we love our's to pieces, it's fantastic and feels like a million bucks.

Yep looks like a 6 wagon to me...
While there is no doubt that Honda makes good (not great) cars, Honda parts and servicing are, at least in Brisbane, much more expensive than Mazda. My neighbour paid more for her Honda Civic 10,000 service that all of you paid for the same service on your 8!

Fuel consumption is terrible.
I had a drive of one of those Territory things (in RWD) and it actually handled okay for a porky truck-like substance but the fuel consumption was appalling and it was just too big in every dimension.

Don't worry. Taka just likes to agonise over car decisions.
I'm still impressed with his in depth analysis of a paper air filter.
And I love that Citroen ad. My son (5) digs it too and dances along with the 'car', even to the point of dropping to the ground when the car 'lands' - it's hilarious. :D

The thing is, whatever he buys, it's gotta be something that not just Mrs taka like...but which taka can pimp!
So, if I was advising taka, I'd say 'yep, the sp23 is the thing'
But...if I was advising Mrs taka I'd say...'anything but Mazda...preferably Accord Euro, 'cos it won't be opposed on major grounds of principle by taka...and it may still have the proper wheels and tyres on it, when you get it out of the garage on any given day.' :D

Hey Taka, I've got it! :D
How 'bout pimping a Honda Odyssey? Get a black one and lower it, put a wicked wing on the roof at the back and insane skirts all 'round. You could even fit 'carbonlook'tm door handles, etc. :D

I am hoping to pimp the SP23 by transplanting all my 8 parts to it. It is fun - !
On the other hand the Accord Euro is much nicer in terms of interior and drive.... Will go and look at Accord Euro (again ) this weekend.

Decision made:
Have seen all the cars again in the weekend.
We have decided on the SP23 sedan automatic.
The Accord Euro is a close 2nd, but the boot is award to put the pram in and maybe because it is not as high as the SP23 boot, although deeper. We can fit the pram into the SP23 with rooms for garbage/groceries.
We can even fit hte pram into the SP23 hatch but it will be a tight squeeze.
Roof rack is more secure on the SP23 than the Euro, I can carry the bike with ease.
Cheaper too.
If we need more space then Accord is much much better than the Mazda 6.
Others sedans are not really in the consideration.
Well next decision is colour

Sure... I asked but no one knows in the dealership.... do you really expect them to know?
Even so I don't think Mazda 3 with 5 spd auto will do much more judging what the 5spd auto is doing in the 6. :o

Taka
I have owned a mazda 6 wagon for the past 3 years and Im very happy with it.The car handles great, returnes fantastic fuel economy 9.5 ltrs per hundred. It has heaps of space in the back especially when the seats are folded flat down and yes they are faster than an sp23 ive had a race with a work college !!Did you get a chance to read the safety story that the car won in a recent wheels mag ??best of all you can pick one up second hand now for about 23k.

Since the wife's taxi wagon is getting past due for a trade in we went and checked out a few replacement options last weekend.
Since the price of fuel is getting a tad worrying and we're past the stroller/pram/just pack your whole house when you go anywhere stage, she's agreed to downsize a little.
So, we went and had a look at the Mazda 6, specifically the Classic Wagon. No demo to be had of the wagon so made do with a drive in the hatch (luxury sport, natch - they obviously want to make you feel good about it).
Been a while since I've driven a front-driver bigger than a small hatch and I was reasonably impressed. Would like to drive the wagon before making any decisions though. Salesman gave me some happy horseshit along the lines of, 'we don't have wagons as a demo because we don't get enough of them. don't worry, there's no difference in the way the wagon drives'.
Although there's not a huge difference in dimensions and specs between the hatch and the wagon, I'm a suspicious sod and this didn't ring true to me. So to the Mazda floggers on the forum, what's the good oil on this? Any appreciable difference between the way the wagon and hatch drive? More importantly, anyone know of a wagon demo they're trying to flog??
BTW, whoever came up with 'sand' as an interior colour has never seen what a 3 and a 5 year old can do with seemingly innocuous items within 5 mins. :D And they supply their own sand anyways...

I've read the first report in today's Australian on the Mitsubishi 380, and I have to think that whatever merits the car might have, that the days of the big 6's are just about over. Wrong call, Mitsubishi. For smaller modern families in these days of high fuel prices, the Mazda 6 and Honda Euro Accord seem right on the money. These are both excellent cars. I drove a Mazda 6 wagon in Switzerland a few months ago, and was very impressed. BTW, medium wagons (BMW, Audi particularly) are common family cars these days there. Much better idea than medium soft-roaders.
