Cool Mazda is thinking: MPS 3

Seen the article in the new Carguide from Melbourne's Herald Sun today?

They have an article about the MPS 3. Mazda is keen on introducing the MPS version of Mazda 3 to boost up the already sold out base models. Why?

Anyway they have no concrete plan yet but it will be similar to the MPS 6 set up with Turbo and 4WD.

If it is anywhere near the 190kW and weight less than 1400kg (not proven yet). I then think it is a better money spent than the Renault Clio V6 (which is literally a HOT hatch with the MR engine behind your back :p).

Should be possible as the Focus/Mazda 3 platform supports AWD, as the Volvo V50 T5 AWD has already shown.

MPS 6 I remember was listed as 20000 quids, and about mid 50K in Australia.

So for 18000 quids...
it is potentionally a A$50K hot hatch with say a detuned, say 160 kW, and 4WD Mazda 3

I thought the Volvo S/V40 platform was the same as Focus/Mazda3??

It is, that's why an AWD setup borrowed from Volvo's spare parts bin will fit with minimum modification to the floor plan.

Yeah, that's what I thought -- the reference to V50/S50 was wrong

Umm... there is no longer any such thing as a S50 or V40.

There used to be S40s and V40s. These were a model sharing thing with Mitsubishi for a Mistu that we didn't get in Oz.

The Volvo range now goes: S40, V50, S60, V70, S80, XC90

The S40 and V50 are the same basic platform and the S60 and V70 are the same basic platform. The S40/V50 are similar to the Focus/Mazda3.

Mazda would have to be pretty dumb not to do a MPS3, but I'd say it would have a 2.0L engine (or a seriously detuned 2.3), not the 2.3T from the MPS6.

The advantage of a 2.0 would be that it met WRC regulations
