Metallic Noise

Hi everyone,

I am getting a bit of metallic "scraping" noise about 6,000 to 6,500 rpm. Does anyone else have this?

I have driven around 3,000 kms.

Thanks

I have noticed something simular just this weekend. Happens when I slowly increase the RPM to around 6k. Above 7k, its fine. If I rapidly increase the revs, I don't really notice it.

Do you still have the problem? I am going to bring it to the dealer this week and have it checked it.

No, its not oil.

Just drive the car. I had the same noise, thats what the warranty is there for. It sounds like metal but I think its a loud gushing of air traveling through the intake.

Yeah it's not the oil. That's the problem, this is my first rotary and you hear these things and as an engineer I start questioning everything! Did you call to check up or has it gone? I will be calling Mazda to check up, and hopefully the good old warranty wont be needed!

Is it under load when it happens?

I have never heard it from mine. The induction/exhaust note changes up there, but I believe that is due to the variable intake tracks.

Cheers,
Hymee.

PS - don't get paranoid. Take it back to the dealer untill you get a satisfactory answer.

Its happened to me while accelerating only. You need to put your foot down quite a bit and it wont happen all the time.

I still think its a wind issue... am watching americans thread!

i have an american spec car and mine does the same thing. i believe it's the auxiliary ports opening, it's the metal sleeve turning or the motor turning it or something, normally don't get to hear it unless im driving alone with the windows down

Hmm, it seems we are more interested it in than them. The reason I'm watching it as their cars have alot more km's than ours. Waiting for something to develop.

Thanks Kas... BTW how's it going with your engine? (I won't be offended if you don't reply though... in case you're still in negotiations and Mum's the word.)

Hey sco,

Yeah no news yet. I called today....they rang me back and said they hadn't heard anything. I dont have the number for the CEO who called me so i'm still waiting on the dealer. Should be tomorrow. I'll be sure to keep you all informed. Regards.

sco, did you go to the Jamboree in Willowbank on the weekend?

Me and 5 mates drove up there in a big campervan! It was a huge event, well worth it.

Kas... No I didn't unfortunately... in the middle of renovating my house so I don't get out much on the weekends at the moment, except for a run in the RX-8. Running around town looking at six different bathroom places has been a great excuse for a drive.

I was hoping on going to have a look at the 20B's and the 26B, and my mates were running around in the sprints at QR on Sat arvo. Didn'make it unfortunatley, and the traffic looked bad on the news. However, I was out there for a private day the weekend before, and some nice chap took this photo of an unsuspecting '8 driver.

Not too revealing

Cheers,
Hymee.
