Might be moving to Brisbane! Tell me what I gotta know!

Anyone living in Australia with experience with Brisbane, come talk to me!

So I will be firing off an application to the University of Queensland for Jan 2010 entry, which means I have less than a year to prepare to relocate my entire life if I go =D

So what I need to know is:
#1) Public transportation, how is it? Is it efficient and fast? I won't be able to afford a car until after I graduate, so public transportation it is! Unless if purchasing another 8 and insuring it is affordable for a student =p

#2) After seeing the abysmal internet limits living on Campus, I am open to renting an apartment of my own, preferably near the school, in a good area. What should I be looking to spend, where should I look, I have no idea where to even start!

If you are going to UQ you will most likely be studying at the St Lucia campus. Therefore it is best you look for accommodation around that area.
Try the following link if you are interested in accommodation www.realestate.com.au type in a suburb such as Indooroopilly and search this and surrounding suburbs for something suitable.

As this is an inner city suburb public transport is very good and is well serviced by bus and train.

Good luck.

skc: Yes I will be attend the St. Lucia campus if I go! thanks for the link =) I will begin checking it out =)

What are the major broadband internet providers out there?

How much is the typical car insurance rate, or link to insurance providers? As well any used-car automobile type search site? I haven't actually had to depend on any form of public transportation for...a very long time now, and although I will be selling the 8 to go, I might not get used to depending on public transportation XD

Another good website is www.ourbrisbane.com.au this will give you a good idea of what is happening around this great city.

Insurance, is age dependent. If you have a good record i would encourage you to get a letter from your insurance provider so you are able to get on to rating 1 discount...this gives you the maximum discount on your policy for having a good driving record

omg 29 C there right now? It's like -20 C here =( Thanks for the link, I have bookmarked it =D

Good to know about the car insurance, but I don't even know if I can afford to buy a car! I'll already be going into enough debt paying for tuition alone.

yeah dude you must get confortable with beautiful sunny days and 10°-20° C in winter!
i've been to st lucia campus to get my IELTS and it's quite easy to reach, i remember i took the ferry that morning...
another good thing is that you can use your own public transportation ticket for buses, ferry and train and if i remember right the monthly fee is something more than 100 A$U...

XXXX is the brissie beer ahahah!!!quite good but my favourite one was Carlton Draught... ;-)

cheers

Lol...that won't be a problem =D I miss the sun, although winter driving can be fun, it's not as good as summer driving.

Good to know, although I'm still hoping to get into grad school here first (makes it just easier overall) but if not Australia really is the only other country I'd like to go =)

oh undergrad is quite easy...I'd say anyone with half a brain can get an undergraduate degree (bachelors degree). This is what I'm assuming you are mentioning by graduation school, school after high school. I already have an undergrad degree, and could technically get 1 or 2 more with a few more courses =p

Graduate or Professional school (Masters, Doctorate etc)in Canada is difficult only because we have very little seats/applying students, this is due to the fact we don't have very many universities that offer graduate/professional programs as well a lack of funding. Going to the US is an option, but I'd rather not go there =)
