Talked to them already.. I think the HKS is a go but I might give the MS kit a miss... Not sure what type of fibreglass they use .... they may not fit well

oh BTW, bumped into NOJOOC today and showed me the HKS exhaust. it looked great and sounded even better (if you like it loud). i think it is too loud for my liking....... i think im getting too old?!?

as for the kit, yeah its hard to determine if they will fit. i think they are based in Perth, so maybe we show send someone from Perth to check it out :D

I know some people are concerned about noise, and others to legal issues.

I note the links provided state the HKS system is "95dB(A) Sound Compliant".

I thought we have a 90dB limit here, so I did some more checking... and found this link: http://www.ajc13b.com/adrs/2801.pdf

Yep - 90dB for "cars" measured at 3/4 RPM of full power.

Cheers,
Hymee.

yes 95 dB is loud. My rally car is ~ 96 dB at about 4000 rpm, and it's not quiet either outside nor inside.

an increase of 3 dB on the A weighted scale (which is what is used) is double the perceived 'loudness' as it were.

So 96 dB is about 4 times as loud as 90 dB

Cheers

and measuring one meter away from the exhaust tip.
95dB is very loud. and i think it will get louder as the muffler fabric wears off in the future.

Yeah, it would be loud. Like RRS correctly said, the decible scale is not linear, but logarithmic.

BTW, for those who didn't check the link, it is the ADR28:

"MOTOR VEHICLE STANDARDS ACT
A national standard determined under section 7 of the Act
AUSTRALIAN DESIGN RULE 28/01
EXTERNAL NOISE OF MOTOR VEHICLES"

Cheers,
Hymee.

PS - L&L, I'm not gunna explain logarithms here. The only thing you'll get with maths is a good sqrt. :D

My custom exhaust is quite freely flowing, and the twin JunBL mufflers are quite deep in their sound.

Exhaust Technologies (who did the job) reckon I'm just squeezing under the 90 dB at 6000 rpm (at about 9000 rpm I'd definitely be over. When I'm driving through the CBD an about to hit redline (in first - I know it would be illegal and dangerous in second) everybody is looking at the car ...

hmmm.... I guess it is ok

AMUSE is great stuff, good hp gain with minimal noise.

Now Japan has a JASMA standard to quiet down the exhaust. Sound like the HKS does not make it. There is Blitz and Trust at present. More on the way. Still don't know how loud they are though

If anyone does get a custom / imported exhaust, and it sounds too loud, or you get hassled by the wife/police/neighbours about the noise - there is a simple solution. Just go to a performance exhaust place and ask to get a performance straightthrough resonator added to the car. A decent one with decent flow show fit nicely just behind the cat.

Is this defeating the purpose of straight air flow, hence less power gain?

No, you won't lose any power if you get the right resonator.

It just takes some of the droning out of the cabin.
A performance /high flow resonator will not affect the air flow (much) since the internal pipe of the resonator will be the same diameter as the rest of the pipes. External to the pipe is a glass/fibre pack muffler that uses absorbtion to remove some of the noise.

I can personally recommend the JUN-BL spiral high flow resonator. I know the Lukey one works well too ...
