My weekend in a BLOWN RX-8

so in hindsight the 12k for joe's rotormaster kit isn't that expensive.once you have spent the 70k or so on an RX8 and then another 12k for joe's upgrade the car obviosly would be 82k,for an absolute weapon.Considering a brand new Porsche 911 turbo costs around 300k for the same sort of performance. If you were to compare it ("the rotormaster RX8 performance")to something JAP, one car out of Japan that has those times(0-100 6.0,400m 13.4 approx)would be the Honda NSX which costs around 250k.so that's cheep horsepower!!!!!!!!.Great job Joe

Hmm, I'd suggest there's more to either the 911 Turbo or the NSX than pure straightline performance but I take your point.
Frankly, the RX8 is a great deal stock when you look at the competition.

The RX8's balance is second to none ..Interesting analogy Mr Sprootz and a perfectly logical one
Funny, people will not transform a great car to a "weapon " for a mere 10 grand or so but will spend 80- 100 K on a friggin" HSV Road Boat"

only time will tell,i left my crystall ball at home sorry.I only guess it's all in the way the car is driven.Knowing some people that drive their cars like they are stollen, not very long at all.Only recently i was a passanger in a standard RX8 when the driver took off at the lights dumping the clutch at 7000rvs(only because there was this huge v8 coupe reving next to us),the car went sideways (the RX8)and by the time we got traction we changed into second (sideways again)eventually we caught up....but the moral of this story is the standard RX8'ts clutch and drivetrain in this situation did not fail. But i guess all cars are different, and they can only take so much punishment.i think if you take care you will get longevity in any veichle. At the end of the day its all in the driver of the veichle

My clutch only had 20k on it and was already on its way out .. An S6 RX7 clutch adapter kit would be ideal ! But from my limited research ,,,is not possible :o
We have done some R&D on a clutch upgrade , and upgraded the stock ( 2200 pound ) clamp rate to 4000 pound clamp ,
With my cutom turbo , so far weve had the boost at 13 psi and had no issues with the clutch ,,I can say the clutch has a bit of a grab to it but its basically brand new ,,,it will settle
The only other weak spot in the drivetrain from what I can see is the carbo fiber tail shaft ,,of course depending on the power exerted on it ,,,Diff is really strong !
We will see if the drivetrain can handle the tripple torque and double power of my turbo .....
Ciao

mazda hasnt got the strongest factory spec cluth/gearbox... unlike the hondas.
most factory spec honda gearbox can withstand upto 600hp of abuse.................
had problem with my other mazda's gearbox, chewed the 3rd gear on 17psi, and bite the bullet and got a dogbox made for it, costing around $5k, it was a strong piece of box

from personal experience i think people are absolutly ludicrous when it comes to the clutch. Spending so much coin on it (the clutch),to make it stronger, faster, harder, more clamp rate etc.etc..All cars in most cases have there weak points for a reason(like the clutch) and how stupid would it be to(in this situation)to make it stronger.......VERRRRRRRY........as i said before drive the car with some respect and it will last a whole lot longer............................... OK now you have replaced your clutch $200-500(depending where you go, if they use gold plated tools[meaning $10ph apprentice with matching uniforms]or JOE FROM" SLOPPY BOX" self employed gearbox legend) .PICTURE THIS, You then are at the lights when some idiot in a shitbox(car worth $5 with some huge exhaust as big as his ego)wants to race,so to prove a point you drop the clutch(bigger, better 40,000,000 pound cllamp rate,etc.etc..)and what happens now!!!.............The **** in the "shitbox"takes off with a huge glug glug glug black smoke everywhere(from the exhaust not the tyers),and your stay there motionless (DEFINITELY A MASTERCARD MOMENT OR A KODAK MOMENT FOR SOME)with your $60k-$80k SPORTSCAR(with a brand new beaut clutch)......oh no now you have to replace the NEXT WEAKEST LINK,GEARBOX $3k-$5k or even the FPULNASADCFTS WORTH $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$..............WHERE DO YOU STOP..... ONCE YOU HAVE STARTED (with all the up grades)THATS THE QUESTION?AS YOU CAN SEE I LIKE TO REPEAT MYSELF BUT DOES IT ALL MAKE SENSE (QUESTION MARK)?And by the way(BTW FOR SHORT) JOE FROM "SLOPPY BOX" IS A FICTITIOUS CHARACTER MADE UP THANKS NO PLUG THERE THANX

Both cars were running at the end of the Nats; they had a battery problem initially, and another ignition problem later (actually, it proved to be a flooding problem -- not atypical for 8's, FI or not)

They also posted the fastest laptime.
However, I agree with Timbo. You want the facts - go to the horse's mouth (so to speak
).
Good on you sprootz for trying to find out the real facts instead of relying upon rumour and hearsay.
Some more of that and we might all benefit.

Not to mention better tyres than those cheapie Nankangs huh??
Point well made though - as Rod demonstrated in his basically bog-stock car, driver ability is far more important than power at Wakefield.
