So far, I believe the official line is that it's not available. My guess is that any dealer offering to fit one locally is probably just talking about a 3rd party unit... you'd probably pay less to have it fitted at a specialist store than have it done through a dealer btw.

I just rang Mazda, and they advised that additional accessories will be available in 2004 for the 8, and the Navigator may be included in that release. (Vague I know!).

Thanks lock n load.

Well its not an option but i think you would have to get a specialist to fit 1 in because my local dealers wont fit nav systems in.

I need it for business thats all.

I think the official Mazda nav kit is the only way to go. Any other TV screen just looks too out of place IMO. There's really no where to put it.

A street directory is just fine for me, but I'd love to get my hands on the Nav kit screen if it makes it to Aus so that I can hook up a DVD player.

For those who may not know what I'm talking about:

At this stage, the Nav system is not available in Australia, so you would have to import it from Japan or Mazda USA, which would be very expensive. I'd say a new dash would be required also. So at this stage, the only options are to either wait and hope that next year Mazda Aust to offer it as an accessory, or buy a 3rd party system.

You'd also have to make sure the system has maps available for Australia, otherwise you might get a bit wet as directs you back to Japan

I'm just about to fit a PDA based system, I'll post some pictures when I've managed to get it to look acceptible.

Cheers

Anyone seen the Navman? It was reviewed in the latest Motor. Seems quite interesting but wondering how the PDA screen might be a limiting factor.

I have used a NavMan in the form of a PDA jacket with built in GPS. It didn't even conform to the offical NMEA standard. They "invented" their own baud rate that is out of spec, which gave us some small headaches in our PDA mapping package. But they work quite well. I think the 1/4 VGA screen would be too small to be of real value for navigiation. It might be OK with well designed tulip diagrams.

The only time I have used in-car navigation for actual navigation (aka driving directions) purposes was in the US in a Hertz rental. I was quiet impressed, but it did have it's shortcomings. We got geographically embarrased more than once in and around D.C. and Reston. We did have some fun with it though.

Cheers,
Hymee.

Hi Guys, I just came across this for those that cant wait to get a screen (whatever it may be used for) into the dash. Its an RX8 accessory available in Japan which allows you to mount a screen up to 197mm in width. It comes with a template for cutting the dash as well. (plenty of nice pics in the thread below)

Hello, my Aussie brothers... I have an 8 on order, with nav. It is an option here in the US. Not gloating, just wondering if I can help in some way. I think that you'd also need a dvd of your area (continent, whatever) that works with the nav system. Just a lame guess, but maybe the nav-makers are updating one for Oz before they offer the option...

Then again, you guys got those square thingies on the bumper in front of each light. My guess is that they are hidden water jets for the lights, or an infrared roo warning system kind of like the reversing obstacle warning dealies on expensive cars here.
cheers

Very nice, and thanks. So, why are they not on our 8s in the States? I know you probably don't have that information, but it seems an odd bit to be hemispherically dependant...

My current vehicle has them, so it rules out some highway dept rules against headlamp cleaners. Guess I'll post this back on a local forum and see what shakes out. Hope the navs reach you soon. bye

You get 2 oil coolers, we get headlight cleaners (sometimes)...

There is equality!

We get the headlamp washers and two oil radiators - but no Hymee grill, so one of mine has a damn great dent in it already.

Cheers
