compressing isnt normally a good thing, might be good to begin with but i have heard many storys how they sag and can break and sometimes one side will sag more than the other side. i'd say, for an rx8, dont go cheap and get some proper springs or coilovers to lower the car

You should be aware too that some people who have changed springs but not shocks have reported poor results.
My own view is that since handling is this car's forte, there's little point doing a half-assed job on springs just to get that lowered look. If you're going to do it, save up and do it properly...

Of course when changing to aftermarket springs it is logical to change to aftermarket shocks as the stock ones will wear quicker with the new springs and the ride will be not as good. But if he wants to go budget style (by compressing springs Im assuming he dont/cant spend a lot) then just buy springs for now and the shocks should last 2-3years and by then he'll be able to get coilovers, or new shocks to match the springs or just get rid of the car.. I know of another 8 who had aftermarket springs with stock shocks and they were on the car 3years however, that car didnt travel many kms.
At least he didnt suggest he cut the springs like a lot of tightasses do... so unsafe.

Agree with the above comments. I've been bitten too many times with half assed mods I did on my old car. My philosophy these days is Do it right or don't do it at all.
This ain't some cheapo Hyundai you're playing with here. Its a finely tuned machine thats been painstakingly balanced by some of the worlds best engineers. It'll cost a lot of money to improve on what they did.
...though lots of people would disagree. There are plenty of people out there (and on this forum) that will go for the bling at the expense of ride and handling.
Each to their own though...as long as we're all happy.

just remember...
are you prepared to sacrifice ride quality for looks?
it might handle a bit better with some quality springs but you cant beat a set of quality coilovers for adjustability.
