Hi guys,

I've been lurking in these forums for a few days now, which I stumbled across while looking for accessories for the RX8 I'm about to order. Lots of good content here.

One thing I'm not confident on is who I should insure the car with. I've heard good and bad things about a few insurers, and I'd rather benefit from all your experiences than find out the hard way myself.

Don't go CGU, today I had a conversation with them where they exhibited deceitful behaviour to try to get me to use one of their "preferred repairers" and deliberately misinterpret their guarantee, and when I read out their "guarantee" word for word they quickly changed the subject.

I believe CGU, Swann, NRMA/RACV are all owned by IAG - and there a raging court battle going on between NRMA & panel beaters in NSW over thier policy of no choice of repairer and no OEM parts g'tee.
You get what you pay for i suppose!
Anyway, i would suggest GIO, Suncorp, AGI, Shannons (If your car is going to be modified), APIA (if you are over 55) or any other insurer that guarantees OEM parts, provides choice of own repairer and no getting 3 quotes for repair.
Read the Product Disclosure Statement for each insurer that takes your fancy - they can't hide any bullshit in there. :D

Rix red8, the court action is interesting, do you have a reference for it?

As we speak i am righting a letter of complaint to CGU regarding this, pointing out that there is no mention of "preferred repairers" in their policy thereby limiting the choice of the insured. I'll be cc'ing this letter to the insurance ombudsman so hopefully they won't laugh it off.

Thanks for the advice guys, all of the info is news to me.

I'm 23 years old, so I may have some trouble acquiring insurance if I turbo/super the car at some point. Not long ago I started an IT security company which is going quite well, so I can finally afford an rx8!

I thought Shannons only did classics. My old man has restored a 1924 Oakland Tourer, an Austin 7, and a couple of 1920s tractors, and he insures his stuff with them. Good to see they'd do something like this, though. Would they take someone on of my age?

I'm with Suncorp Metway - been very happy with the service so far in 9 months of owning the car.
Reasonable price (almost the cheapest)
Two year New Replacement policy

Had to use them twice for two not-at-fault repairs. Got my choice of repairer.

You'll find some insurers won't insure you at all for the stock car let alone modified until you're over 25.

I just got a quote back for some Mazdaspeed parts from a dealer, the spoiler was $3900 and the side skirts was $3500. Eesh. I think I'll be looking at alternative body kits.

I got a $1500 insurance quote from Justcar, so it balances out a wee bit. Still....

I think the rear of the car looks unfinished without a spoiler. I must have one! I'm ordering a stock one for now, I may get a new one in 6 months time or so. The stock one looks nice on Omicrons car, and my accessory selection is a bit similar to his.

See I'm the opposite, I have side skirts and the front air dam but no spoiler. I think it conflicts with the lines of the car.

Before you make any final decisions about insurance, do a search of the Australian Forum for 'insurance'. It should take a couple of hours to read the results but there's a pile of great experience there and it's worth the time.

I thought Shannons only insure if the car is not for regular driving and you were part of a specialist car club.

I am with GIO. Cant comment as I have luckily not had to use them.

I'm also curious too, i already tried them and as far as i can remember they wouldn't insure me because the cars value was too high for someone under 25.. similar story for young and cool. I'm just 24 and the ONLY one i could find who would even insure me was NRMA which is 2500 a year with an 850 excess parked in a gararge in Canberra.

With the ****-fight going on within the industry right now, avoid NRMA like a hole in the head.

The way they are screwing up everything right now, you better steer clear of all the heat. Would be a shame getting caught up in the mess they have caused.

GIO are the same as Suncorp.

I started off with AAMI as they were significantly cheaper (and wasn't too concerned about the lack of repairer choice). Last renewal I switched to Suncorp as they were only $25 dearer and I get choice of repairer.

I've only ever had one insurance claim and it was for home and contents with Suncorp. They were extremely easy to deal with and even waived my excess when I elected to do some of the minor repairs myself as some stuff that was damaged as about to be renovated. Only thing to watch with them is the renewal cost. I've heard of situations a few years back where people have had renewals higher than if they quoted as a new customer... so it pays to double check every year.

I'm with AAMI and I would recommend them. Competitive premium. The catch is that my car is not insured for under 25's, so they might not insure you. I've had to make 2 claims in anger already, and the whole process was a breeze. Not so good that I plan on making any more claims in the near future, but much less painful than I anticipated.

they wouldnt touh me with the 8 or my last car simply because im under 30 and even if i was 30, they premium would be on the wrong side of $8K anyway

Ours is insured with NRMA - has been since new as they were the only mob capable if insuring a $70,000 car for $1,000.

2 years later the agreed value is now $53,900 and NRMA wanted about $1000 again so they got the job - I have just paid the extra $70 to nominate my own repairer on this policy - and you can take it anywhere YOU choose - no argument - so it is $70 well spent. Our other 2 cars have been with GIO for years but the best they could do for the RX-8 was $1400+ and an agreed value of only $49,000 so they naturally didn't get the business on the RX-8 this time around.

This is on the NSW Central Coast so of course anyone in the centre of a city is going to pay more - not sure where you are Mauzl but shop around and you might save a $ or two !

Enjoy the car - we sure do.
