Official Mazda Oil - now available
Not sure if anyone else has picked up on this yet, but I just got my hands on 5 litres of freshly delivered "Mazda Rotary Oil" at Eurocars in Sydney. Price was $58.91. It's a 5W-30 mineral oil. It comes with a little warning indicating that pre-Renesis rotary engines must not be filled with synthetic or semi synthetic oils.
For what it's worth, their service manager went on at some length about the importance of adhering precisely to Mazda's instructions when taking the dipstick levels. He says they've encountered large variations in the reported level if the 5 minute time frame is not followed closely. ...

Unless I missed something...
The "offical" document I got with my car (the owners handbook) tells me to put a whole bunch of grades of oil in, depending on locale. One of them is 5W30. I can't recall anything about synthetic or mineral based. So if I only use what the manufacturer recommends, then any problem is their problem, not my problem.
Perhaps I am sounding like a craked record

Q: How about the oil filter?
For those have done the first 1,000km service and changed the engine oil, did you change the oil filter?
If yes, did you get it from Mazda or somewhere else?

Interesting.
As it's extremely unlikely that Mazda has opened its own refinery or is even paying for a special formulation of some existing oil I wonder what oil it really is?

My dealer just topped up the oil at the 1k service. I was a bit disappointed in this. However I have sinced changed the oil at the 5k mark however not the filter.
I am using the Castrol R product, which was recommended to me by the dealer.

thats what i thought as well. i have been told that the engine oil accounts for about 1/3 of engine cooling for the rotaries. havent done my first 1000km service yet, but i will get them changed for sure.......... not where did i put those keys?!?:D

I think this one comes down to the workshop and what oil company sponsers them.
I think this no synthetic stuff comes from a old mazda stance that synthetic oils were not suitable for rotarys as they have to burn the oil. as synthetic oils don't burn that clean leading to cokeing up.
the new rotary design probably dosn't burn that much oil anymore and maybe mazda have ok'ed synthetics again?

Why don't synthetic oils burn as well?
They are the same as oil out of the ground - long chain hydrocarbons - the only difference is one is made in a lab via a chemical process, and the other is out of the ground, with a few impurities.

I'm just going by loads of discussion on ausrotary.com.
aparently mazda did a blanket ban on synthetics because a couple weren't good (ban the lot for legal reasons).
pople reckon the oil rotoarys use should be closer to a two stroke formula. most people use synthetic in there series 6-8 rx7s anyway with the only problems being some synthetics burn in the turbos which dosen't effect us :D
anyway I reckon it doesn't matter on the rx8 as Hymee pointed out, they don't say not to use synthetic in the hand book.

A lot of Mazda dealers are using synthetic oils for servicing, so I guess it must be okay.
Some dealers I've spoken to in Sydney generally use Castrol Formula R or Magnatec, so I hope they're right.

1. A Mineral base oil can have synthetic additives.
2. Read this bit... "not suitable for PRE Renesis rotary engines."
