Taka, a few questions from an ignorant Ford driver.....Who are Mazdaspeed, a race team? A retailer selling aftermarket products to Mazda owners? An engineering division of Mazda?

If #1, I would not use their oil....racers don't need long term durability. #2 are out to make a quid. #3....well, if they are part of Mazda, then they need to have a chat with head office 'cos the head office line is oils ain't oils, Sol.....

BTW, I have yet to put any oil in my car, the dealer added 100ml at the 1200K (Yeah, I was late) freebie service...and they didn't overfill!

Yeah MazdaSpeed is the Performance / Racing Division of Mazda Japan and Nth America.

They are run under the Mazda Enginering and Technology dept.

They also have a tuning shop which is where you can buy a car and send it straight off to MazdaSpeed and get it made crazy and buy it off the Factory floor.

They are also the dudes that built the Mazda 787B 91' LE Mans winner.

Plus................

91' Mazda LM Edition RX-7 (300 units)
04' MazdaSpeed RX-8 (300 Units)
04' Roadster Turbo (300 Units)

Also reguarding the oils.................

We have the Mazda Rotary Oil 5W-30 for over 1 year here so Mazda Aust. well ......

Ummmmm I don't need to say anything as to why you don't have it. Its pretty obvious.

True...

just like putting redline or motul oil in to the S2K or 350Z for example for daily use... it is a waste of money... right?

To be honest since Oct last year it is the very first time I check a dipstick... I even asked my best friend how to do it :D

I learnt to warm up the car and stuff and I now carry the oil bottle with me.

One thing ... what level of engine oil is optimal?

Half b/n High and low. 3/4? Full?

Well as the old saying goes 'Desperate times call for desperate measures' !!

It was nearly midnight on Good Friday recently and we were 10 minutes from our destination near Wollongong when the oil light came on - stayed on for a minute or two - then went off.

Well there was little I could do then and there but keep driving and check it in the morning. Yes it was low - it hadn't been checked for probably 3,000 kms and was now up to just over 9,000 kms....

The problem then became 'where do you get it' - especially after hearing the stories here of 'Mazda hasn't got any in aust' etc which is ludicrous when you think about it.

I called the local Wollongong Mazda dealer - got told the service department was closed so the next call went to Mazda Assist - after taking every possible little detail off me I was then told they couldn't help !! Their people don't carry that sort of thing. I told them I was only calling in the first place because I had heard it was so difficult to get the RX-8 oil and I couldn't drive the car without it - after a pause she suggested trying the Autopro and Repco types of shops for it.

So off my father-in-law and I went to his favourite car shops - only had to go to two before we got it and ended up with 5 litres of Penzoil for $28.95. It states on the container that it is 'Semi Synthetic' but since it was all I could get it will have to do and it will get changed shortly in the 10,000 service.

Personally I really thought Mazda Assist would be more use in times like this...

Regards
Jeffneil

Hi Jeff,

I think you may find Mazda Assist is probably RACQ answering the phone as "Mazda Assist"

I'm using a Castol oil in mine, I've checked with the dealer and they are happy for me to supply the oil for each service. I hate letting the dealers do it because they put a different brand of oil in everytime.

Because the RX8 needs a particular oil I'm happier giving it to them as I know the right stuff is going into it then as well. I'd probably stick with that Penzoil stuff if its the right weight.

Deon.

Great stuff Gomez. If nothing else, it proves there is someone in Mazda Australia who actually writes stuf and maybe even sends it out to dealers :p
