My secret: I rang the parts department of my friendly Mazda Dealer. They quoted me $12 (from memory) for the genuine oil filter. For that money, I don't now why I would bother taking a risk with anything else.

Cheers,
Hymee.

Geez, for $12 you could get a Mobil1 filter that's way better than the stock one.

On what objective criteria is it measurably better?

We are talking Australian Dollars. Yes - There is a whole world outside of the US

Our $12 cost would be roughly $9 of yours.

Cheers,
Hymee.

There is an oil filter thread timbo that carries out a scientific test of various filters.....and the Mobil 1 filter came equal first IIRC.....I'll see if I can find it later.

Thanks 'mez -- that boggled my mind IME, oil filters -- provided they have some reputable brand, and I could not see any reason not to use the OEM -- are a commodity. But it is good to see someone has put them to the test!
