The oil light - new sump baffles have arrived

Hi all

Slaven Mazda in Canberra have just called me to advise that the parts to fix the oil level light issue have arrived.

Mine is booked in for this Friday. By that time I will have completed 4,800ks since 14 Aug. Have only topped up oil once -- about 600ml, but see the level is getting a little below full now.

I run Sydney-Canberra at least once a week. So far, with 3,900ks travelled, my average fuel consumption is 12.3l/100k, with a best of 11.4 and a worst of 14.7.

Also just received by post today details of Roadside Assist, Jim Murcott course, book and t-shirt from Mazda Australia.

Love the car!

Guys, did you all have the oil light come on and then complain to the dealer or are all early release cars involved, and therefore requiring the new sump baffles? Mine was delivered August 1st so wondering if mine is affected too! So far oil caonsumption has been negligible (1250 kms).

Hi Guys,

I had the oil warning light come on briefly, 2 or 3 times while I was coming back to Sydney from Canberra last week. I had about 1,000 Km on the car at the time. I mentioned it to the dealer (Eurocars Mazda) when it went in for the first service on Monday. They didn't seem to know anything about the problem at the time, but rang me today to say the new sump had arrived and asking me to bring it in for it to be fitted.

Looks like a general problem for, at least, the early release cars. (I got mine on 14th August.)

I'm not complaining - I love the car.

Cheers,

Jaycee

My understanding is this is a general problem with the early release cars, although my dealer was not aware until I called them after my trip when the light came on. However, to their credit the service manager checked Mazda and received a Mazda email on Monday 1 September advising of the problem for the early builds.

For reference, my car was delivered on 14 August with VIN JM0FE103100100052.

There is official Mazda correspondence to dealers on this, and if your dealer is unaware, tell them to try harder!

hi guys

i have a very early rx-8 delivered 28 july 2003. i haven't seen the oil warning light activate yet and i did a longish drive from melbourne to bright (about 600-700km round trip). i asked the dealer about it at my 1000km check. they hadn't heard of it until they rang mazda australia. i also emailed mazda and a guy called me to say that there is an issue but will only replace the part if the owner reports the problem.

i think the problem WILL be reported at my 10000km servicing. that way when the oil is being replaced, they can change the sump and oil level warning sensor.

cheers

Tell them the light came on anyways. I did and then they checked my VIN, it matched up to the batch and they replaced it, however it did come on once. At the same time they found other problems..will start a new thread about it soon =(

Kas - sorry to hear about your problem. We all hope it works out for you.

I drove my '8 from Newcastle to Brisbane last week (800km) and encountered the oil light for the first time. Bcking off the revs or simply putting the car into neutral for 10 secs was enough to get sufficient oil back to sump and extinguish the light. I only found that it came on after a significant period of sustaining speed in excess of the speed limit (wont say how much). At 100km/h, I didn't get the light.

Not a peep fom my dealer yet about new baffles, even though my car was on the first boat. Looks like I will have to chase them up.:D
