Just an update - the pinging stopped the second I changed fuels. I've been using BP Ultimate for the past couple of weeks and don't think I will bother with anything else (unless it's an emergency!!). In terms of economy, I get around 300km from a tank. Not that great but I was expecting it when I bought the car so it wasn't a huge shock. Almost a month later, I still love this car!
Car also seems to run a lot better after the service but I still can't beieve that spark plugs cost around $80 each!!!

How many km's have you done? We have found that at first stages of the 8 the km's are around that, then it will increase to about 400-450km which is around the average most get. Count yourself lucky I actually get 250-300km and my car has done 52,000km! I swear its running too rich, no idea how to solve it. Probably will just grin and bare it.
Why did you have to buy new spark plugs??

Thats good k's Kal...you're doing extremely well on the economy stakes.
My needle seems to move very quickly the first half of a tank....and it makes no difference if its Shell Optimax or BP Ultimate...but to be fair to Mazda 8/10 its city driving...
Sometimes I wish we had a bigger fuel tank capacity but I figure the extra weight would burn extra fuel, which would off set any savings between refills anyhow...

I find the fuel doesnt last as long with BP Ultimate but the car responds a lot better. Shell Optimax lasts longer but not same response as BP Ultimate. I tend to use Shell as the petrol station is closer and easier for me to get to then BP. Although I did then realise my tyre pressure was quite low for my 19's low profiles... I think it was running around 35psi, and I know with my low profiles I usually run between 40-42psi. I think that should make a difference now. I think Nate put 40psi in my tyres last week.
Ohh weight.............. less weight = burn less fuel? OMG think I found some motivation LOL Although my hip pocket is bloody empty lately with the stupid house lol so I think its balancing out big time..

Hahaha, I read these kind of threads and think, "hmm, I must take more notice of economy". I honestly wouldn't have a clue what my mileage is - it's just not something I think about.
It's a definite black hole in my car interests, lol.

With about 72.000km on the clock, I consider my car just about run in. I've been doing a mix of city and highway driving the last few tankfuls, and my fuel consumption has been around 10L/100km. Pure city driving puts this up to a shade under 12L/100km. Fuel is Shell 98 RON.

I had my 60000km service done few weeks ago. They didnt have to change my spark plugs because we had the recall few months ago. I hope that didnt mean ur car had new plugs and then you had to pay for new ones again..

AFAIK exhaust shouldn't have an effect on fuel economy unless you find that you are accelerating a bit harder for the aural pleasure.

Hard start recall ment new spark plugs, few of us havent had our spark plugs changed at service because the the recall done prior. But if you dont mind that is up to you
I think my fuel thing is stuffed as I dont drive much as before. Now it is:
1. home to work = 600m
2. work to bank/post office/shopping centre etc = 2-4km
3. back to work 2-4pm
4. work to home = 600m
5. parents home to my home = 1.2km
6. my home to parents hom = 1.2km
with the odd perhaps home to safeway or coles and that wouldnt be more then 1km.
The longer driving is all done in Cromax's car..... lol *hides because he'll remind me how many services hes had done to his car since hes known me* hehe
